Evie has been to see the vet today. She’s lost about 75g over a period of a few months but was otherwise her usual self until one night last week when she wasn’t. Suddenly one day last week my little bar rattling nipping monster was hiding in her corner tunnel and refusing to come out. When I managed to get her out she was puffed up, floppy and not at all her usual self. She (being Evie) refused to have any syringe feeding without a fight. As it was night time I decided not to contact the emergency vets but instead I gave her some metacam and planned to take her to our vets the next day. Just before I went to bed I found her puffed up in a corner of the cage looking dazed and Boris decided to have a chirping session (his first one we’ve ever witnessed). I thought that this was all indicating that perhaps my feisty lady was about to pass.
Next morning, it was as though a miracle had happened. MrA was despatched to look in the cage and reported that she was at the pellet bowl filling her face as usual. By the time I’d got the veggies ready she was back up at the bars giving them a rattle and giving my wrist a nip when I put the veggies in. Given the miraculous recovery it didn’t seem right to take an emergency slot at the vets so we waited until today.
Evie was on her very best behaviour for our lovely vet. She allowed him to weigh her, examine her fully and even check her teeth with no fuss at all. She thoroughly enjoyed a chin rub and massage from him! The upshot is that there is nothing obviously wrong with her that can be found at the moment. She does have a large cyst on one ovary but nothing at all on the other. The working hypothesis for this disturbing episode is that she had a cyst on the other ovary that had burst and made her feel dreadful, but that she’s recovered from it and is now back to her normal self.
We’ve decided to keep her under review for now. We aren’t going to do any investigations at the moment but we will wait & see if she maintains her weight and remains as perky as she is at the moment.
