Don't know if this has been raised before on the forum. I recently visited Pets at Home and saw they were selling a new range which included a eucalyptus treat marketed at guinea pigs. I know the people in the actual shop will do nothing so emailed through their website saying I believed it wasn't safe, including an online research article saying it wasn't safe and asked what research they had done before marketing it for piggys and how they had come to that decision.

Thought you might be interested in the reply I got this morning:

Further to your recent e mail regarding Woodlands Eucalyptus Sticks for Rabbits, Guinea Pigs and Hamsters 80gm.

Although we believe the product to be safe, we are aware of differing opinions regarding the merits of eucalyptus as an ingredient in small animal treats, so we have decided to err on the side of caution and stop selling them.

I wish to assure you that again that our main priority at Pets at Home is the welfare of all pets, both in store and those that belong to our customers.

So they have took it off the shelves? Do you have a picture of the item I buy alot of the woodland stuff I hope that wasn't one of the things I was buying :(!

oh my! I was looking at this treat on the P&H website yesterday. Thinking of what xmas pressie to get my piggies and I thought this looked quite good and new, but I am glad this has been risen because I could've gone out and brought it for my piggies for xmas. I am not going to buy it now.

Thanks for this :)

its a shame that woodlands released this product as it has dented my confidence in them. I thought their range was fantastic, my piggies love the herbs and the treats from them and i was considering buying their dried food too. If i ever buy anything from them now, I always check the ingredients content to make sure theres nothing else they are adding.

Thanks for posting the reply, It is reassuring to know that they have removed it from sale. However, I don't like the fact that despite this, they still actually believe it to be safe for guinea pigs and rabbits, so they may well use eucalyptus in other products in future.

I'd advise anyone buying from this range to be extremely cautious.

oh my days! i nearly bought a packet of these, but i was in a rush and put them back! i was going to get them when i went back in :o

thanks heavens i looked on here!

The Rabbit Welfare Association have taken this issue up as well as a petition being put to no 10 by someone on a different forum & various forum's members have emailed P@H & the manufacturers. Vitakraft say they have carried out their own tests on piggies & say it is safe.

The person who started the petition has also contacted Australia Zoo, who say it is toxic & has also contacted the PFMA (Pet Food Manufacturers Assoc.), The Pet Care Trust with details of her email from Australia Zoo & The One Show. I've not heard how she's gotten on as yet.

The manufacturers want scientific proof but quite who would be willing to test it on their own piggies/buns to find out how much is too much before death occurs is beyond me!

The ASPCA (American Society for Protection of Animals) & other notable animal organisations all have eucalyptus on their poisonous foods list.

This is the latest news; an email from P@H with regard to these treats.

Thanks for posting that Niki. Interesting as that is the exact email that I got and from the same person. Guess a corporate decision was made and a mass email sent to all who complained.

Without doubt that'll be the case :)

I'm horrified to see that these still haven't been taken off the shelves!

I've seen them both in Blackpool and Bangor P@H in the last 2 days!

They are still in the Belfast one too, I spoke to the staff and they were saying the store is probably waiting till they are sold out, and not reordering them! :(

Same here, my 2 love the feed and forage nuggets and I have a few chew toys from that range. It is good we know but a lot of people don't, they should know better. :...
