I have just prepared the boys tea and I found a bug in the cabbage I bought this evening! It looks like it's in a cocoon and it's quite big like a beetle. The cabbage is from the UK. Has anyone seen a bug like this? would I be ok to put it in the garden? I am a bit scared a spider might be in the cabbage and that's why it's cocooned :vom:

*shudders* no idea I'm afraid but that would creep me out! It does look a bit like it's been 'wrapped' rather than being in a cocoon but maybe it died part way through coccoon-making due to being packaged?! I'd put it in the garden and hope a bird eats it . . .

Unless you have specific moral or religious beliefs stopping you from doing so, I'd destroy it. It could be a foreign insect if imported cabbage, could be dangerous or carry disease.
Also if you send the image to Sainsbury's you may get compensation (usually £5-£10).

It has creeped me out! I'm glad I found it rather than feed it to the pigs :vom: I have put it in our green bin and will send my pics to Sainsbury's but at least I know no pesticides are on the greens! The guys did not care they wanted their tea! :xd:

I LOVE "cavolo nero":drool::drool: Here we find it at the market only in winter months. Its taste is sweeter after a great cold weather.
But 200 g is just enough for the piggies, though! I buy 2-3kg! :D
anyway I have never seen anything like that:eek:, I often find snails hidden among the leaves. I think it is nothing dangerous, but...:eek:

I have just found an old picture of last January, coming back from the market with my beloved "cavolo" (cooked and ended in 2 days):D:D:D:D

but am I wrong or you are talking of a tea? maybe I have not understood... :hmm:
because the usual "end" of that cabbage here is this one::))

(even without bacon).
This cabbage is typical of the region Toscana, they use it for traditional soups; but it is also a traditional veg in roman countryside; it grows up with few cares and my Nan used to grow it in her garden at the village.

I'm growing some this year and lots of kale. I'd say the bug wouldn't be harmful as it came from Lincs and if it thrives there it can't be a tropical pest!
Look what I found at work, wouldn't fancy this in my cabbage!

Elephant Hawk Moth Caterpillar
First glance I thought it was a big eyed monster!
Just a caterpillar!

Sorry for the confusion, we call our evening dinner teaXD a bit of a regional thing.

I think I would have passed out if I met that caterpillar in the cabbage! Lol

heheeh! I was thinking of boiling some leave of that cabbage for a special herbal tea:)):)):)):)):)):lol!:
it might become a new recipe!

Hahaha I even thought for a minute can you do that!? But cabbage tea :vom:

I bet the guineas might like that! Could be an idea for a hipster guinea pig cafe :lol!:

Just my 2 cents here , consider yourself lucky in this day and age as you're not going to find many bugs like that in pesticides-ridden veggies.....

I would have done the same straight in the bin then set fire to the bin. Then buried the ashes of the bin :) Can't be too careful....

Meanwhile your piggies stare on waiting for tea :))
but... poor "insect":soz: maybe it was a wonderful butterfly ...
in these days I had to take a hard decision, buying a spray for killing the gnats who were hovering above the sink and also above the cage, waiting on the wallpaper:evil:... All started some months ago with some fruit and having no heart for killing them before now they have reproduced...:hb:

Now I have guilt, but maybe it was the Predator....
