My guinea pig has a URI and was prescribed a dosage of 1 ml twice daily, and after further research I found this is WAY more than what is recommended for GPs. And now I'm panicking because I trusted my vet and went ahead with giving him 1 ml just now. He weighs only 1 kg.
I'm going to keep an eye on him for the next 24 hours in case he shows any side effects. He was prescribed probiotics too so I really hope that will prevent things from getting severe.

Can someone please tell me how much Baytril I should be giving him? I've been to many vets in my city but none of them are cavy savvy, and after today it's obvious I can't rely on a vet's advice alone. I'm really feeling lost because we've only had GPs for a few months and even after being so cautious of the meds and treatment we give them, something like this happened.

Hi!

This dosage is OK and won't harm your piggy. Please split into two and give 0.5 ml every 12 hours.

This kind of dosage is more often seen with urinary tract issues (about 0.4 ml twice daily) but it depends on the severity of the problem your vet is treating (i.e. whether the URI has gone into the lungs).
Please keep in mind that URI is much more prevalent in newly sold pet shop babies, which are a lot smaller, and that a milder URI is generally treated with smaller dosages but it really depends on your vet's findings and considerations for maxing out on (but NOT exceeding) the possible baytril dosage.

If you have a healthy companion, please prop up your piggy's gut with 'poo soup' or another probiotic, depending how your access is in the current situation in your country. Baytril, especially in higher dosages, can also affect the gut microbiome and can dampen/kill the appetite or cause softer poos (no problem) or diarrhea.

Thank you so much for the detailed information! This forum truly is a life saver.

I didn't know much about poo soups, will definitely try to give my piggy that now. How often should I be giving this to him?

Please talk to your vet. If you split the dose you’ll only be giving half that the vet advised, as you were told to give 1 ml twice daily. I agree it seems a large dose, but you need a conversation with the vet, as there may be a reason for dosing on the higher level. I hope your piggy feels better soon.

Thank you ❤️
Is 1 ml twice daily actually safe for him though? I've been through many pages and threads here and this amount prescribed seems to exceed what GPs are usually given. We've been giving him 0.5 ml 2x daily for 2 days now. If I increase this dose I'm scared his gut might not be able to deal with it well. He's been given antibiotics before and it really affected his appetite and poops for a few days.

My boy just had a UTI and was on 0.5ml once a day and it cleared up completely after about 7/8 days but I gave it for 11 days. However if your little one stops passing urine this is an emergency and you must go to the vet straight away. Unfortunately I didn’t act quickly enough and thought his less frequent urination was part of the infection ….but he had stones too and it became fatal in his case so stay extra vigilant
