Emily managed to give herself a very impressive hayseed poke last night.
I managed to pull it out, was quite big! It was 10pm so I washed her eye out with colloidal silver and applied tear jel.
This morning I phoned the vet but they are totally and utterly under the pump being understaffed and with one clinic closed due to covid. Therefore no appointments available, understandbly! So I asked if I could be prescribed the antibiotic eye drops that Emily had before on Boxing Day a couple of years ago when she’d done the same thing. So I wouldn’t have to have an appointment. Receptionist was meant to get back to me, but by 2pm she was still waiting on the vets permission. Emily’s eye was very cloudy, and she was not opening it fully. So I decided to take her to the vet down the road to me. I get very nervous going to new vets. Especially one that doesn’t have an exotic vet, and is mostly a farm and dog vet. They saw my young chicken the other day, I wasn’t there but Jon took her in and we were happy enough with how it went.
They could see Emily straight away if I made my way there immediately.
The vet was lovely, she’s the one who saw sooty then chook too so that was nice to give her an update. She put the fluro dye in her eye and we could see a bit of damage. She was really nice to Emily, saying what a good girl she was being :) She sent us away with an antibiotic eye gel and also something that will help the dilate. I wasn’t sure what that was for? Anyone know what she meant? Annoyingly I find it really hard to take in information when someone is telling me something important.. I try so hard but it goes in one ear and out the other.
I will also give her metacam.
I’m also not sure how long I should do the treatments for..It doesn’t say on the labels. 1 week maybe?
Should I also apply the tear gel that I already had, a couple of times a day to keep her eye moist?

After the vets still with dye in her eye..

Aw poor girl, haypokes are no fun. Sending healing wheeks to Emily, I hope she feels better soon 💕

Just abt a month ago, little Nugget got a hay poke. Though, it wasn’t as bad as this. My vet gave us drops to give her for a week. I’m not that sure abt antibiotic gel, but I hope she recovers soon! Sending healing vibes!

All the best! You can use the tear gel but need to wait for at least half an hour after the antibiotic. It helps in terms of comfort but the hydration also helps with the healing in deeper areas of the eye whether the antibiotic doesn't necessarily penetrate.

Never come across the dilation medication with guinea pigs. If in doubt, leave it be. As you have been seen, the infection should not have penetrated far into the eye and should heal pretty straight forward. Ulceration can happen very quickly.

Poor Emily - but well done for getting her seen by another vet so quickly. I hope she’s soon on the mend x

Sending Emily healing vibes and hugs to you, well done for braving another vet, she sounds lovely.

Haypokes are clearly popular atm. Thea has a bad haypoke too! It doesn't help that she has decided she doesn't like the Chloramphencol eyedrops and tries to scratch them out.
