I posted last week that one of my boys was having poop troubles. I took him to the vet and he is now on antibiotics. Just before, i gave him his medicine— 1/2 ml, very slowly, as per usual. Except this time he immediately started breathing hoarsely and making this gagging motion. He won’t cough, which is my biggest concern. Does he need a hospital? He is just sitting there, occasional rough breaths, chattering his teeth and looking uncomfortable. He was fine just this morning. He is five years old, i’m very very nervous because he has never done this.

Hi

Can you please put your ear to your piggy by the nose, the throat and the lungs to see where the problem is sitting breathing-wise. Not coughing means that likely nothing has gone down into the lungs but that he may have an issue with swallowing too much at once and something may have gone up his nose.

If in any doubt, please see a vet; especially if he goes downhill further and is no better by tomorrow morning.

Hi sorry to hear this. He may have just had too much at once or have gone down the wrong way like how we can accidentally choke and fix it ourselves.

I would observe him for laboured breathing, if you are really concerned you can always call the vet, it’s better to be safe than sorry. If they start acting differently and looking like they’re still struggling i would definitely take them for a check up.

I am not a vet but i have had a similar situation and my piggy was completely fine but i understand the panic.

Some guinea pigs can be drama queens but definitely keep a close eye incase it wasn’t a passing issue. Wishing you luck x

Hello,
It is definitely coming from his nose, which actually relieves me as initially i was worried he might’ve inhaled the medicine into his lungs. My biggest concern now is just the gagging motion, since these two things seem to not be as correlated as i thought they were. I’ve been waiting on a sneeze or something for 20 minutes

Thank you :) the only reason I am so quick to panic in situations like these is because I lost a pig to aspiration pneumonia two years back. I am always so extremely careful with antibiotics or critical care because it is my biggest fear! It sounds to be in the nose, though, thankfully. I will call a vet in a while if he does not perk up.
