What I have been wondering is when piggies eat their poop-Ceacotrophs- the special ones how do they know which ones are the ones to eat? Also why do they do this?

I have no idea how they know the difference but they eat them to absorb the nutrients that were lost during digestion. Hopefully someone else can explain this more!

The ones they eat have a different smell. I imagine they feel different to pass. They eat them to retain essential vitamins.

My elderly guinea pig had problems passing poops and he had anal impaction where the softer poo built up and caused a blockage. I used to have to empty his bottom about every two days. I used to feed the soft poo to him which he loved to eat and often got my finger as well. I attach a link to Peter Gurney which mentions the eating of soft poos.http://www.oginet.com/pgurney/analimpact.htm
