I bought this for my guinea pigs and they seem to be really enjoying it so far, however I seen a post on Facebook about them being dangerous and how eating them can cause intestine blocking, does anyone know how safe these are or how unsafe and if I should remove it from the cage or not?, I didn’t buy this from pets at home so I’m not sure if it’s just them that have the problem

Also I know this house is too small for the both of them but I didn’t realise this until I got it, they have another hidey that fits them both with space to spare

I’ve not heard on here of any problems with carrot cottages. We have several threads on here where carrot cottage demolition has been carried out by enthusiastic piggies. My own have enjoyed them for several years. I’ve bought them from P@H, Wilko, Amazon and Zooplus and not had any problems with any of them. They are designed to be chewed and eaten by piggies so far as I’m aware.

Hey :) Ive never used one of these so can't comment on experience, however if you feel like your piggies are enjoying it, as long as you weigh and do regular health checks I don't see the issue with leaving it in their cage. As VickiA has said, they're designed to be chewed on, and aren't they simply made from cardboard and hay on the top? I wouldn't see any issue myself. But just keep an eye 😊

I have never used it but considered it before. I had personally never heard anything bad about them. I heard someone else say their piggies loved it too.

My piggies seem to be enjoying slowly destroying their carrot cottage. I got one after seeing them here on the GPF and haven't read that anyone thinks that they are dangerous.

My piggies love these but they've never managed to eat a whole one! I figured they are mostly cardboard so safer to chew on than plastic furniture. They usually just get one at playpen time for 3 or 4 hours at a time.

Personally I haven't had any problems with them but keep an eye out just in case

Never heard of any problems with them before. Sure, with any product there may be one or two pigs that don't get on with it, doesn't mean it's a bad product. My piggies love the rough fibre it provides whilst also being fun to destroy!

Thanks everyone :) I’ve left it in the cage for now as they do seem to love destroying it they’re still eating veg and everything else is normal so I don’t think it’s causing an issue I just like to be safe :)

I wouldn't worry about the size, they'll soon remodel it to fit :)) I've never, ever heard a guinea pig having a problem after chewing these. I'd be interested to hear more so will see if I can find it on facebook to check out its validity

Mine prefer hay cubes too but a bit too much, they fight over them and get a bit obsessed and then I have to confiscate them. Also fatty Clover got stuck during her first haycube encounter today and tipped it over so there was a giant frantic wiggly bottom sticking out... I got her free and she went straight back for more! Its rabbit size carrot cottages for my plus size ladies I think :)

I have something similar and my Finn chews on it every so often. There are small bite marks here and there but nothing big. I was told to allow them to eat it since it is safe for them to eat. Also, it will help their teeth.

They’ve ate most of the grass and carrots from it but don’t think they’re too interested in eating the cardboard they seem to be spitting it out :)

I’ve never tried a hay cube might purchase this at the weekend :) mine are only 6 weeks old now so I bought the carrot house which is sized for gerbils and hamsters, both of them try to squeeze in but the house falls over then they run away 😂

She must be really big then! Even Meg can fit in one nicely and she's has a big bum. When she asks me "does my bum look big in this?" I don't know whether to tell the truth or not. I don't want to hurt Meg's feelings!
Yes Clover was stuck in the hay cube and my husband said "dont they make those in rabbit size?" and I had to tell him that IS supposed to be rabbit size... she'd nibbled the holes bigger as well before she went in!

Mine love the hay houses - they are sooooo much fun to destroy, especially if you can make it collapse with your cagemate inside :yahoo::yahoo:
The only issue I have with the cottage now is, I have the bigger one but when I am trying to sleep they eat it and it is SO loud 😂

My two had four of the medium sized cottages. They stripped the roof of all the carrot and the walls of all the hay, but left them still standing and intact enough to be slept in. I never bothered with cosies and that in the end, because who wants a cosy when you can be king of your very own cottage?
