Hello.

My guinea pig, Muffin, was sprightly & healthy as ever until around 12 hours ago. He went downhill very quickly and is refusing food and water, and likely has gut stasis by now. I took him to the emergency vets at ~4pm where he was x-rayed and diagnosed with a large abdominal tumour that is pressing on his internal organs. The vet confirmed he had little time left, and didn't even think it would be worth administering fluids. She gave him a shot of meloxidyl & sent us home with instructions to give further meloxidyl every 24 hours until his passing.

With it being NYE/NYD/a bank holiday, the vets will be closed for two more days, and I'd have to pay an extortionate fee to have little Muffin PTS at an emergency vet clinic an hour away. Additionally, I prefer to have my guinea pigs pass at home -- familiar surroundings and friends with them.

My question is this: can I orally administer an overdose of tramadol to my guinea pig to ease his passing? Will it cause him suffering in some other way (i.e. nausea, fitting)? Is there anyone who has any idea of what dose I'd be looking at? I have tramadol as prescribed to my dog for a leg injury to be used as needed, 100mg tablets.

I worry that poor Muffin can't seem to get comfortable, always twitching his head and regularly moving to a new spot in his home. Even if I do take him to the emergency vet tomorrow to be PTS, he'll have to struggle through the night and likely won't survive for that long anyway.

I'm sorry, I know that home treatment with medication is never advised here, but I'll do anything to give my pig a painless passing.

I am so sorry you and Muffin are going through this, but please do not try and administer an overdose of medication to him.
This could actually make the situation far worse.
Sadly passing naturally and peacefully is not always something that happens, which is why with such a bleak prognosis pts by the vet is often the best option.
If Muffin is clearly suffering and not going to recover I would consider taking him back to the vet to end his suffering humanely.
It may cost more due to being a holiday, but in the long run you will feel far better knowing he didin't suffer unduly.
