Hello my boy got diagnosed with an inner ear infection he is currently on the antibiotic enrofloxacin every 24 hours… I'm in another guinea pig group and they said to give bene bac, I'm currently day 2 of 10 treatment plan is it too late to give now? should i give it to him? hes pooping, eating, drinking perfectly fine his energy level is normal.

It’s a good idea to give a probiotic to a piggy who is on antibiotics.
Baytril (enrofloxacin) is usually very well tolerated but sometimes antibiotics can cause a bit of a tummy upset and a probiotic such a benebac can help combat that.

Is he also on any painkiller?

Make sure you increase your routine weight checks - instead of weighing him weekly as part of routine care, weigh him daily while he is unwell. Ear infections are painful and can it mean they reduce their hay intake. The weight checks are the only way to ensure they are indeed eating enough hay (which is 75% of their daily food intake).

I hope he is ok

Thank you for your reply! He is not on any painkillers, i have talked to the vet because i was unsure and she told me that it is not necessary unless he is having loose stool or any gi symptoms. He has been eating a lot of hay, he is drinking having normal poops and normal energy level. My question now is should i still give it to him even if he is doing pretty good and not showing any signs of gi issues? Should i only give him the bene bac probiotic if i see these signs later on in the treatment process?

I will start weighing him daily thank you so much!

The choice is yours.
There is no harm in giving him the benebac if you wish to do so. He may not have issues with the antibiotic but as we can’t tell the future, by giving the probiotic you will be ahead of the game. It won’t do any harm whatsoever for him to have it.
Equally If you wish to wait and only give it to him if he has issues then you can do that.

Definitely do the weight checks. You can go back to weekly checks once he is better

Very surprised he isn’t on painkillers. I would speak to the vet about that. I’d not be happy if I had a piggy with an ear infection and not on pain management
