This is Dylan (left) and his two new HUGE girlfriends, who I have named Rosie (as she has a red patch of fur) and Ziggy ('cos she has a stripe pattern on her face like David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust :P ).

Well, I use the term 'girlfriends' lightly. So far the routine goes:
He tries to get close to them (normal)
They shoo him away as they are not in season (normal)
He then responds with copious amounts of teeth chattering and rising up on his haunches, causing them to teeth chatter also, bringing on a full blown fight (totally not normal and very annoying considering they were rescued for his company!)

This is especially dangerous with Ziggy who is the more dominant and fights back a lot more. I'm not leaving them alone together for obvious reasons, which is not the aim of the game.

Any suggestions? Thanks
 
I'm assuming that Dylan is castrated?
It is possible that as the girls are new to him, and he to them, there is a dominance thing going on with them and they are trying to sort out a new herd hirarchy.
Are they side by side so that they can talk and smell eachother even when they are not together?

With guinea pigs there is always a dominant one. They are trying to establish who this is and they do this by challenging each other. It looks much worse then it really is. You have to leave them to sort it out. You only need to separate if they draw blood. If you keep stopping them it will only start again when you put them together.

Yes he is neutered, they do live side by side through mesh and theyve drawn blood at least twice now. I've left them launching themselves at each other for a couple of minutes, how long am I meant to be letting them fight for? They're both going for contact and not backing down...

If they have drawn blood I would not try again. Sadly they seem to have taken a dislike to each other.
 
Success! Had their first night in the same enclosure last night and have totally settled down. Had no teeth chattering all day and just argie-bargie-ing about who gets to squeeze in the corner etc.

Dylan's finally learnt that just 'cos the girls shoo him away doesn't mean he has to go into killing mode. Can't quite work out who one the dominance battle out of him and Ziggy, but they seem to be content now. Oh happy days in the piggy world :)
