I am very sorry that you are losing your old friend. That is a great age to live to!

Does he smell from the mouth or the back? It is likely related to the breakdown of his metabolism/no longer being able to swallow. Unfortunately, as the perception of smells and taste varies enormously from person to person, it is impossible to for me to guess.
