Where do you guys buy your dust free hay from?

My boys LOVE the excel herbage dandilion & marigold hay - but I wonder if I could buy dust free?

How long does it usually take your piggies to get through a bale? I've been looking for alternative to the current hay I'm getting and DFH looks like a good option.

I absolutely love Dust Free Hay - however they've recently had a price increase due to sourcing better quality hay from elsewhere, the problem for me is that my 10 pigs get through two of their large bales in 4wks - i used to pay around £34 - the recent price hike has meant the same bales will now cost £42 mallethead

I will order from them every now and then, but for now ive switched to regular meadow hay that i pick up for around £5.00 per bale - it lasts around a week with my lot, so is a lot cheaper than dust free hay - not as good quality. Shame really as dust free hay had a regular purchaser of their hay...but an £8 increase for hay that isn't really any different to what ive always had off them is a little steep!

I think that if a group of pig owners could get together and make arrangements with a farmer it could be the start of something good. There are several people in the US that make a business out of just that- arranging hay to be grown and selling it to pig owners. Of course that is a big deal, starting a business, but if you know of anyone who knows a farmer they might be interested in growing and selling better quality hay. Just an idea- but you know it might be that a farmer would have no idea that there is a market for hay grown for guinea pigs.

Ooh blimey it is more expensive isn't it! I think I will order a sample pack & see if my wee men like it as Rodney has never really taken to any other hay other than his dandilion & marigold one....

I would say i go through 2 bags a month and each bag is £5 ish. My boys are indoors and have a hay tray so its not like I'm covering the whole ground - so I will go through less than people that do....

Do you think dust free makes alot of difference to their chests? Mine don't have issues I just wondered if it is better for them health wise...

I don’t think it’s worth the price. We used to buy all the different types of bagged hay available & found that a lot was wasted. 18 months ago we tried a bale of hay from a local farm. It cost only £4 & all our 4 girls loved it. It appears to be far fresher than the shop bought stuff even when you get last year’s bales in the spring. The price only a fraction & we now use it with Megazorb all over the floor of their run which is 8ft x 2ft 6in (2.4m x 0.75m). We started using Megazorb after reading a blog by a North East guinea pig rescue that wouldn’t re-house their piggies to owners who were using sawdust or wood shaving that are a far greater source of dust which can cause allsorts of respiratory problems. Another product worth considering especially in the winter if your piggies are used to eating grass in the summer is Readi Grass. Our girls love it & eat up a large bowl a day. You can buy it from lots of pet stores but we buy a large bale from a farm stores which costs £12 & lasts about 6 months. You’d need a dry place to store it though.

xx
