I made a post in another section regarding my piggies behavior. I mentioned Hermione eyes.

I've got an appointment for the vet, earliest is Tuesday so some pre-advice would be appreciated.

Around 5 days ago I noticed Hermione has been production more eye gunk than usual, I thought it was because she wasn't cleaning her face at all but I've seen her do it 'ocasionally' but not thorough.

So with that I've been gently bathing her eyes with boiled water that's cooled down with little cotton balls every day. It seemed to have nearly solved the gunk issue.

I've noticed though that her eyes are usually half closed and she looks tired, the eyes are dull and 'might' be sunken ever so slightly. She doesn't look as bright as usual. Some advice before I get to the vet would put my mind at rest.

Here's some pictures, sorry for the bad pictures but we're in the middle of getting her used to us.

Here's picture of Hermione's eyes (Bad quality & link to pic)

Amy just so you're aware, cotton balls can leave behind little threads/wisps......

i do hope someone can advise you soon ....... HUGS XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

She may have some mild conjuntivitis or a small ulceer you cannot see. You really cant tell until the vet has a proper exam of it.

Just to add, i do find that my pink eyed piggies tend to squint their eyes much more, I'm not sure why. They are perfectly healthy and dont have discharge but i notice they squint more often.

A similar thing happened to one of my piggies and the vet said it was a sign of dehydration. Is she eating and drinking normally at the moment?

I have the C&C cage in the spare room, will be bringing it in the front room until she's better. As far as I'm aware their both eating and drinking. The both have a good amount of fresh fruit and veg a day so that has a water intake too.

I went to the vet today and it appears she sign minor signs of a URI (The vet wasn't specialized in guinea pigs). No signs of crackling in the lungs which is good so we caught it early. She's on anti-biotics given through her water bottle.

Edd also has signs of crusty eyes so she's on the same meds along with lots of cuddles and gentle cleaning of the eye.

Thanks for the support everyone! I'll keep you updated!

What antibiotic have you been given?

I'm concerned that you have been told to put it in the water. You will have no way of knowing how much she's had, if the other one is drinking it unnecessarily, and putting things in the water often stops them drinking it.

I'd strongly advise taking a look at the recommended vets thread and seeking a 2nd opinion.

The one licensed to guinea pigs I think baytril? I'll be keeping an eye on her eating as the vet told me it can make them lose their appetite. I did tell my concerns to the vet and he said to use the syringe and give it to them orally if I'm concerned about whether they're getting the right amount.

The other guinea pig does have signs such as the crusty sand watery eye but no wheezing etc ...

I have a specialist vet in Cardiff but I'm on benefits atm because of my chronic depression and anxiety (Long history of mental health in family) and my partner is in full time studies so we can't afford the specialist at the moment. We used the PDSA services, it's the best I can do for now and I'm keeping good care of them and keeping an eye on them. If anything changes I'll call the vet again but I feel pretty positive.

Thanks x

Please give her the baytril directly and not in the water where she will only get a little bit of them and where you really can't control the intake. Not all guinea pigs drink or drink lots, so she may simply not get the baytril.

Baytril also tastes foul, so is likely to stop her drinking the water with it in anyway

Are there any tips for administering baytril (sweetening the medicine as it were!) or is it just a case of squirting it in the mouth and making them take it?

Not had to use it myself yet, touch wood, but I'd be interested in any tips and it might also help amylittlehands?

You can add a drop of ribena

Great advice! I had a huge amount of difficulty when giving Hermione her dosage through syringe.

I have a feeling the vet hasn't given me sufficient amount of Beytril. There's a tiny amount in the bottle, it's supposed to last a week but looks like it can give 4-5 doses at max. 0.75ml a day.

Any place I can buy this if I run out cheaply?

I'm currently forcing baytrill on one of my little men, it tastes very bitter & he puts up a real fight. I've been adding fruit juice, tonight I bought some ribena in case he likes that better.

I would not be putting it in water!? My boys dont drink much at all you would never know if he even got any and as previously mentioned, it would taste rotten they will just avoid the water bottle! You should have been given a syringe...

Its a prescription only medication; you can only get it from a vet

I had a syringe supplied :) I'm giving it directly to her. The vet did say I can either put it in water or orally and I shared the same concerns as everyone here about the right dosage as I don't know how much she drinks.
