Hi, I have a rescue teddy boar named obito he is around 2yrs old and I have had him for 1 year now. I’m new to this forum and wondering if anyone can offer some advice, he is an indoor piggy and has fleece bedding, recently I’ve noticed over the past few months he seems to have quite flaky skin and he squeaks when I’m combing him. I had already self treated for fleas/mites and I’ve tried a anti-fungal bath. I took him to the vets as it wasn’t improving and they advised he had mites just from a look at him, it wasn’t an exotic vet and they gave him an anti-inflammatory injection, some steroids and a mite spot on he advised me I should see some improvement quite quickly but he is still the same :( He has a couple scab/dry patches no dramatic hair loss, I was considering taking him to the exotic vet. Any thoughts please?

:wel:

Dry skin can have a multitude of reasons so seeing a knowledgeable vet to determine the cause is important.

Please don’t self treat for mites or fungal - always go to a vet first. Treatments you can buy from a pet shop aren’t strong enough to deal with parasites.
Guinea pigs don’t have a species specific flea so fleas are not a problem doe them in any event (cat or dog flea treatments are toxic to piggies)

Thank you! I think an exotic vet is the best option then hopefully they can provide me with answers. I was expecting the vet to do a skin scrape incase he had a skin fungal infection as my other piggy isn’t affected who he lives with. I did use a guinea pig safe treatment but that was when it was very mild when I first noticed it, I was wondering whether this breed was more prone to skin issues. He has a very good varied diet and bedding is spot cleaned every day and changed every 3 days. Appreciate the advice.

Teddies do tend to be more prone to drier skin (I am about bring home a new teddy boar myself this week!) but it’s of course best to always check out medical issues first.
It’s always best to go straight to the vet and not be tempted to use any pet shop products - even if they are safe - they aren’t dosed highly enough and any treatment given prior to seeing a vet has effectively wiped the scene of essential evidence enabling a vet to make a diagnosis.
I would see a knowledgeable vet and see what that brings

Aw amazing all the best, they are amazing. Mine is a right little character, very vocal and a big foodie :) yes I agree, it’s just a shame there’s not many local vets around specialised in piggies I find, I just want to find someone I’m confident in. I will be taking him in the next 2 weeks so hopefully can get him diagnosed and on the right treatment to soothe him.

oh really! That’s great to know thank you! This is what causes my anxiety as I don’t want them to have unnecessary meds I know they can be very sensitive to things. Don’t worry I won’t be seeing that vet again lol
