Hi, our 3 year old Ginger has started drooling 2 weeks after having spurs and front teeth filed down. We have been syringe feeding her as the front theeth had been filed far too short and still don’t close in the middle. She is deteriorating fast, we have tried to contact Simon but it’s impossible to even get someone on the phone or answers on emails.

In your experience is s there anything we can still do or does it sound too late (as teeth are too short)?

Any advice is very welcome.

Best wishes,
Nicole

I am very sorry, it sounds like a botched dental :( I’m in no way an expert but you should syringe feed until the teeth regrow. The problem you have is if she is unable to eat hay, the back teeth will become overgrown. I hope you can get hold of Simon x

There is so much salvia now that she has trouble swallowing. What can I do?

Can the back teeth become overgrown after 2 weeks of being filed right down?

It sounds like the back teeth are still too long, which means the mouth won't close properly. You need to get your vet to refer to Simon. Please see this post for how to go about getting a referral. The Cat and Rabbit Clinic, Northampton - Referrals for guinea pigs with dental issues

If you can get your vet to send the clinical notes over to the Cat and Rabbit Clinic tomorrow, you should get offered an appointment very soon.

Hi

You need a referral from your vet to get an appointment with Simon unless you are already registered with them.
It sounds like a bodged dental with the back teeth overgrowing again.

Here is our emergency and bridging care advice bundle, including practical advice how to spot when a piggy is dying and what you can do if things really go haywire (which I most fervently hope wont' happen): Emergency, Crisis and Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment

Please continue syringe feeding as much as you can; little but often. Salivating means that there are swallowing problems.

Called the vet today and they insist that the new vet requests the records. It’s all been so difficult to be seen by someone who knows what they are doing.

Can the back teeth grow so much in 2 weeks that they are causing problems again? Or could it be another reason that causes the excess salvia?

What a nightmare! It used to be done this way, but due to data protection, the new vets are not allowed to request the clinical notes, they have to be sent across by the vet who is currently treating the pet. The history belongs to your pet, so please tell your vets that you give permission for them to send them across to Simon. If you have any further problems, please give the Cat and Rabbit Clinic a call and tell them what your vet is saying.

They don’t take calls , we tried to contact them 5 days ago and then filled in their contact form, haven’t heard back.

Do you know if the back teeth can become overgrown in 2 weeks after filling?

My husband called and the receptionist said that we have to fill in the online contact form, which e we did 5 days ago and haven’t heard back.

I will call our vet again in the morning. Thanks.

Do you have any other advice? Shall I force the food as she isn’t happy to take it anymore?

I rang them last week to get the correct protocol for getting referrals, which is the information given in the link that I posted in my previous post.

Just give little and often syringe food, to keep his system ticking over!

I tried to follow your instructions but was rebuffed by our vet, will call them again in the morning. Thanks for all your help.
