Hello. One of my piggies has lost about half her body weight over the past 3 weeks, she has also lost all the hair under her chin. At the same time, she has started begging for food every time I go in the living room and she is definitely eating plenty. The vet has examined her teeth - they’re fine; no lumps and bumps; he’s also given her an x-ray which has shown nothing. He is lost as to what’s wrong with her, as am I. She’s happy enough and eating but she looks so dreadful, poor wee toot. I wanted to ask if anyone here has come across anything similar before and also, should I try to hand feed her too to increase her weight?

My vet is very good with piggies, he’s been seeing mine for over 20 years. I would have thought cancer would have shown up in either blood tests or an X-ray? She is 4.

Hi!

Please always step in with support feeding as soon as your piggy has lost over 50g and switch from weighing once weekly to weighing daily at the same time. Keep in mind that you cannot control the hay intake by eye.
On the other hand, greedy eating can be a sign that something is not right with processing the nutrition somewhere in the body; it is more often seen in the very elderly when the organs are no longer working well or one of them is going into failure.

Has your vet checked for potential diabetes, hyperthyroidism or kidney failure?

Mystery weight loss is my least favourite symptom because so many different causes can be behind it, and it can sometimes be very difficult to figure it out if it is not a very obvious one. :(

Thanks. I have been feeding her extra but not yet gone down the syringe feeding route. I have been weighing her daily and will carry on doing so. I think he has checked as he took bloods. I am going back today so will ask.
