In the past couple of months Miss Oreo has learnt a new trick - draining the water bottle.
She will literally sit next to her water bottle, put her mouth sideways over the end of the spout, and push the ball up so water trickles through her mouth and into the cage.
She regularly dumps a 500ml water bottle every 24 hours!

In all honesty that trick is getting a little dull now, so I have tried 2 different water bottles and both times she and Eddi barley drank, and almost fought to get to their regular glass bottle when I put it back, and proceeded to spend a good 10 minutes drinking.

I tried a large ceramic water bowl, but Oreo weighs a hefty 1.3 kgs and took less than 2 days to work out that if she stands on the side of the bowl she can tip it.

So I have finally resorted to putting a small no tip bowl underneath their regular glass bottle and emptying this 2 - 3 times a day.
I guess it is just going to an Oreo thing, but this got me wondering if anyone else has piggies that empty their bottles just for fun?

And as your reward for reading this long (and fairly pointless I suppose) post, please have a photo of the monster in question - Oreo.

Awww how cute is she? Annoying though that she has found a new game! Mine haven't discovered that one and I hope they don't.

OUCH! Some piggies just love to work out a naughty trick...

My blind brown/black aby Mischief (from pre-Tribe days) figured out how to topple a hay bag leaning against the wall, then sniff out the opening, climb in and go to sleep. She did it on purpose; I let her do it and watched a few times how she would go about it very systematically.

Mererid is the one that is into wallpaper...

It sounds like Oreo has found her own play thing.

also my piggies do the same as yours! they had never drank a single drop of water for months, then I decided to teach them how to use the bottle considering the summer temperatures and the dry air at home (for air conditioning always on). I was sure they had learnt to drink, but I was wrong... they simply used the bottle and the water for having a nice POOL. Now the pool is no longer useful and they empty their bottle just for fun, but not that much. The bottle is little and it is still half full... They play with the water only during the night because during the day they stay out the balcony, or in the kitchen or on the sofa... where no bottle is available (and in fact they don't care). During the day they spend their time eating grass and weeing a lot...
In the meanwhile I fill their bottle with special "light" water just in case they would like to drink

Oh dear, naughty Oreo. I wonder why she does it. Is it "fun"? Does she like the sensation of the water in her mouth? Might be a good topic for a thesis :D

Ugh... my guinea pigs don't do it, but our hammy does. Only at the cottage when her cage is placed in a specific area, so it might be worth trying to change up the environment a little bit in case something that you don't understand is triggering it. I have no idea what goes through her little hamster head, but I totally sympathize!

Buzz used to do this, took us ages to work out it was him and not a faulty bottle. He was brain damaged and we didn't think he had it in him to be so clever bless him.

Awww she's just gorgeous and so innocent looking, I don't believe she could be that naughty lol. Mine don't empty their bottles but Patchy will chew her wooden hidey whenever she want's food which is alot or is just attention seeking because she will stop as soon as she hears me tell her off and then makes a game of it which I get tired of waaaay before she does. I swear the most commonly said comment out of my mouth on a daily basis is "Patchy stop chewing that hidey".

Mine do this too! Three nights in a row now I’ve found the bottle emptied. Anyone have suggestions for fixing this? They’re soaking the bedding :(

Perhaps try a different bottle or put a bowl underneath. Or

Yes, my piggies play with their water bottle sometimes too. They don't completely empty it, thank goodness, but they do play with it by chewing on the end and sometimes spitting out water.
