Hello, I was given doxycycline for my pig with suspected URI. She lives with other guinea pigs and I want to treat them as well but was not given enough of the original 100 mg/ml solution. I have non expired 25 mg/5ml doxycycline only unlike the other formulation it is grape flavored. Does anyone have experience administering this formulation to guinea pigs so I can confirm that it would be safe? I'm mostly worried about the flavoring agents.

Of note, I have tried to get in touch with the original vet but they aren't responding.

I’m sorry to hear she is unwell.

I'm afraid we cannot advise you to treat undiagnosed and potentially healthy piggies on spec.
The immune system of a healthy piggy often fights off bacteria and they never become unwell despite being in contact with the contagion.

Please just treat the piggy known to be unwell as directed by your vet.
Only treat the others if your vet tells you to do so, and if they become unwell.

The care advice we can give is to ensure your piggy also has a probiotic 1-2 hours either before or after an antibiotic dose (never at the same time as). This can help her appetite - antibiotics kill the good gut bacteria as well as the bad illness causing bacteria - have a boost.
We also advise that you switch from the routine weekly weight checks and instead ensure you weigh a poorly piggy every morning. This ensures she is still eating enough hay (hay intake cannot be gauged by eye) and isn’t losing weight. If the antibiotics affect her appetite and she does start losing weight then ensure you step in with syringe feeding a recovery feed.

I hope she is ok
