@Betsy and anyone else in the Dorset /south west area.

I tried to make an appointment for Pedro to see the exotic vet at Piddle Valley Vets this morning and was told they are on leave for the next 2 weeks!

Pedro has been up and down since the end of August and thought we'd cracked it after found blood in his urine a couple of weeks ago so he was on antibiotics plus metacam and cc syringe feeding. He looked like his old self again and then this morning l found him all hunched up in the corner not interested in any food.

So obviously needs investigation but my local vets said I should take him to Piddle Valley. What or where should should we go next?

Any advice, thanks

For some reason it's posted twice can the other be deleted please?

Just seen Vets for Pets Poole - may try them next then ...

I use Vets4Pets Holes Bay. Rachel has left now but she recommended either Catherine who I have seen and Jazz who I haven't. Rachel was the guinea pig vet there. Don't see Will if he's still there cos I know more about piggies than he does!

Oh no, Catherine is no longer available - "taken a step back" receptionist said and Jazz has left.

Vets 4 Pets & my local vet suggested Magnolia House in Christchurch - there's Natterjacks in Poole and they suggested Sarah Fisher there

I have just registered with Natterjacks.

Me too! I am taking the boys tonight after work. I'm worried too because we are away over half term so really need to make sure they are stable and eating well by Sunday.

I'm now booked in at Dorchester Vets4Pets, but that's tomorrow morning. Not sure whether to cancel tonight or just go🤔

I would just go tonight as you have an appointment. They told they didn't have any appointments until Thursday until I explained that I just wanted to register there.

Ok so I took the boys to Natterjacks in Poole to see Sarah Fisher.

She was very thorough and diagnosed Pedro with arthritis in his back legs, also thought he was a little bit gassy.

Basil, something going on that needs further investigation once pain is under control- his front teeth aren't straight so possible the issue is further back but she didn't want to do anything until he's looking a little stronger, so the boys are both on dog metacam, ranitidine and metacloprimide. Back on Thursday.....

I'm from North Dorset, sorry I've only just seen your post. I've heard that piddle valley vets are excellent for exotics. I've not used them but one of their vets moved to my veterinary practice &he was very good. unfortunately that vet has moved on now :(

Sounds like the boys have been sorted now, 🤞🏻 hopefully they'll make a speedy &full recovery xx

Pleased to know she seems to know her stuff and has given your boys dog Metacam. Cat Metacam is so weak that it hardly has any effect.

Thank you, that was the problem, everyone was saying Piddle Valley Vets, but the vet is on leave for 2 weeks as of this week, so ended up going to Poole. Not like there's ever a good time for these things to happen, but it all adds to the stress!

Yes, I was glad about that, but why is it that the cat one is licensed for guinea pigs then?

Almost all medication used for piggies is off licence. It has been explained to me that Metacam (cat version) is licensed for piggies for post operative pain following soft tissue surgery. That’s the extent of the licence. But many non exotic vets treat that as meaning that cat Metacam is licensed whereas dog metacam isn’t and so prescribe cat metacam for everything. But in reality every form of metacam given for anything other than for pain relief after soft tissue surgery is actually off licence.

Hi, sorry late response, l use Damory vets at Blandford Forum, the piggies vet is brilliant ,(Cherry) keeps piggies herself.
