They are in the same run but with the door open with extra room in the conservatory, which shadow has only ventured out once to my knowledge, unless they are sneaking around in the middle of the night. I have had them in the garden in the daytime for the last 2 days and seem so much happier than when inside, hoping its just a case of getting used it the change in surroundings and getting over the loss of fluffy (we lost her 3 days ago8...) May have a look at the c & c cages that I've heard mentioned.

Also is it ok to use cardboard boxes as hideaways eg upside down shoe box with a hole cut then I just throw away when tatty, they haven't been bothered chewing them so far, very new to owning guinea pigs and haven't noticed others doing it, not sure if its a good or bad thing, I keep adapting things as I get a new idea to make things better, maybe I'm changing things too much for them.

Don't worry they'll get used to it. Our forst 2 girls we had to set up a video camera to see if they existed the first week we had them they never came out...

Cardboard boxes are fine, piggies love anything like that. Plastic pigloos are great too because they can be easily cleaned - where as the boxes if they are anything like our pigs will get destroyed very soon or soggy from wee at bottoms.

Your piggies may still be grieving over the loss of Fluffy. Sometimes piggies take a while to get used to their new surroundings. Cardboard boxes are a great idea for hideys etc but it may be a good idea to leave things as they are for a few days so that your piggies can become accustomed to their surroundings. As long as you make sure they are eating and drinking just watch over them for any major changes in their behaviour. A sure check if a piggy is moving about is usually the trail of poops, an indication of where a piggy has been.. ;)

It's just new territory syndrome. Dot some covers (tunnels, card board boxes, anything that gives cover) around the open space so they can use those as a safe base to explore their new home from. Guinea pigs roam around a firm territory; their prey animal instincts kick in when they are out of their known patch.

They will hopefully make themselves at home in a few days.

cheers, I will follow your advice and see how it goes.

just a quick update, I did the hidey holes dotted around the outside, which really did the trick, I've also attached a tunnel onto the ramp which Star especially loves running up and down so the also have the 2nd level which I didn't expect to be able to use.

Star did a bit of chasing shadow around, was getting concerned at 1 point she might be a boy, but found out its quite normal, Star is still quite nervous when I put my hand in the cage, she is now happy me wondering around outside her area, and she has also fed out of my hand, its a slow process but think she is really coming on.

The are spending the day in the kitchen , whilst I'm cleaning their cage out, Star has gone a bit nervous now she is in a new area, Shadow on the other hand is loving it , running around. they are such different characters.
