Bit of a long post here...

Toast has been on Domperidone (and Ranitadine) for bloat since November last year. It worked well at first but the past couple of weeks it doesn't seem to make a difference whatsoever. She's also getting bloated after any veg. There is a long list of veg that makes her bloated which i avoid but now even the "safe" veg is bloating her.

This is the first time my vet has used Domperidone on a guinea pig, he asked some other vets but could only find one who was using it on a rabbit. So he admitted himself he didn't know how well it would work but I agreed to try it, and he wasn't aware of any long term damage/side effects.

I also take Domperidone as an anti sickness tablet and recently at my doctors I was told to come off it and swap it for metaclopromide as Domperidone can cause heart problems and your body can get used to it and stop working. This made me think of Toast, the fact that it doesn't seem to be working anymore and for a couple months I've been telling my vet she seems to be showing signs of heart problems, but nothing showed up on an x-ray.

Is it ridiculous to think that if Domperidone can cause these issues in humans it could be the same if used in guinea pigs?

Toast's bloat is getting out of hand, its been over a year and even my vet said last week if it continues he wants to change the ranitadine to cisapride. But after what my doctor said about long term use of Domperidone I'm now worried about Toast being on it as it's already been 4 months. Would it be stupid to mention this to my vet? He did say himself it's not something he's tried before.

As her bloat is getting worse she's also now having a flare up of her cystitis and squealing when peeing - something she hasn't done in a long time.
Does any one have any suggestions as to what might be more effective?

Sorry to hear this, hope she feels better soon. I can't offer much advice other than if you are worried about the long term effect especially after what your doctor said then I would mention it to the vet. There is no harm in mentioning it as it might be something that the vet doesn't know.
Good luck.

None of your concerns are ridiculous, you should discuss them with your vet, after all you only want the best for your piggies.
Sending healing vibes to Toast and .

I would definitely talk to your vet about this. It is absolutely valid to think that something that happens in humans is relevant to Toast's problems. Metaclopromide (Emiprid) is commonly used on guinea pigs (including my own), in conjunction with cisapride, so this might be a better bet anyway.

Thanks everyone. I've just phoned my vet and mentioned what my doctor said about the Domperidone. He agreed it could be that, but first he wants a urine sample to check why she's squealing when peeing. If it's just due to the bloat (when the bloat is bad she does have a flare-up of cystitis) or if it's due to crystal built up or infection. So I'll drop a sample off today and go from there.

I feel so helpless with Toast. It's just been constant issues for over a year now, 6 days is the longest she's ever been without any kind of dental issue, bloat issue, or cystitis :(

Vet just phoned, her urine sample showed moderate levels of calcium oxilate (not sure on spelling) and some blood.

I don't understand how she could have a built up of crystals, her diet is 90% Timothy hay and forage, with only a very small about of veg, mostly pepper and coriander/cucumber and a few nuggets a day and she drinks plenty of water.

It seems to be her bladder issues are having a knock on effect causing the bloat and dental issues.

I've to take her in on Friday morning to have a chat with my vet as to what more can be done for her and also an x-ray.
Poor pig :(
