We have 2 new rescue piggies, had them just a few weeks, they are approx 1 year old. Both boars. Fozzie mounts Lewis, not constantly but he does do it, he is clearly the dominant pig, Lewis runs away but does not seem too bothered about it. Will getting Fozzie neutered make him less likely to mount Lewis?

Hiya, it can take about 2 weeks for them to settle into their new home and surroundings and it’s normal behaviour, getting them neutered only prevents pregnancy and won’t stop the dominating, I’ve got 2 set of boys over 1 year old and each set has one who rumbles and chases. I hope they settle and enjoy your babies , do they have two of everything and hideys with two exits so no one gets trapped, how big is your enclosure? Welcome 🙏

This is normal dominance, don’t worry.
Neutering him will not stop it or change his behaviour, all neutering does is prevent pregnancy

Hi

Dominance is right at the very core of a hierarchical guinea pig group. Neutering in guinea pigs only prevents boars and sows from making babies but it doesn't change their social interaction or their personal outlook. As long as the companion is not fussed about it, you need not worry.
For some boars, frequent mounting is a way of staying in touch in a kind of 'bro, here I am!' way.
Some piggies with insecurities also take longer to settle into a new place. This comes often across as over the top dominance (a mild form of fear-aggression).

You can find out more of what neutering does and does NOT do in this guide here:

Thank you everyone for your replies. We will not get Fozzie neutered and hopefully in a few weeks they Will settle in. Lewis despite being the one that gets humped is the braver of the two.
