My two girls are about 8 months old and although not sisters have been together since they were 3 weeks old. They have very different temperaments, Maisie is very curious, brave, chuckles constantly and is stubborn as an ox, whereas Poppy is quite nervy, doesn't talk much (apart from when she wants fed ) and is much easier to handle. Maisie likes her own company but Poppy loves being close to her, much to Maisie's occasional annoyance grrrr
We've had our fair share of rumble-strutting, ear nipping etc over the last few months but about 6 weeks ago Poppy seemed to bow down - literally - to Maisie so we thought that's it dominance has finally been established. From that point on we made sure to support Maisie's dominance by feeding her first, giving her attention first etc, thinking that was an end to it mallethead.
The past 2 days Poppy has been relentless in her pursuit of Maisie, rumbling constantly, following her everywhere and generally not letting her get a minutes peace. Poor Maisie is not one bit happy at having to be constanly on the move and is wingeing all the time. She will let Poppy go on for so long and then she snaps at her which sends Pops off crying but then it all starts again. Poppy has always rumbled more often but Maisie will for the most part completely ignore her or firmly put her in her place, yet when Maisie rumbles Poppy cries.
Sorry this is turning into a bit of an essay mallethead but I'm just not sure what to do. Although Poppy isn't stopping Maisie eating or drinking, she isn't allowing her to relax even for 5 minutes. I feel like putting her in her pen for a while so she can get some peace but then Pops would start crying because she's on her own. I guess that I was wrong and dominance hasn't been settled at all so should I stop treating Maisie as the boss? Shouldn't they have sorted this out by now?
Goodness me...guinea pigs can be hard work |)
