I changed the way I had separated my boar and sow in their three storey cage. Previously they had one and a half levels each separated by C & C in the middle level. I put the sow on the top floor and gave the boar the bottom two layers. I left the ramps in but put a C & C grid over the hole under the bedding so that they could still see each other. This was because the sow might be pregnant (she was sold to us as a boar) and I did not want any ramps for babies to fall down if she suddenly gave birth.

It had worked well for almost a week and he often came up to say hello through the grid and rumble at her. However, today the boar managed to move the grid and crawl under the bedding. The first we knew about it was the noise. I dashed in to see them fighting. She has two cuts on her nose and he has one.

I have now added cable ties to ensure he can't do it again but I am worried that they will not get on together again after such a fight. Is this normal for a boar and a sow to fight like this or is it because she might be pregnant? I am pretty sure he would have tried to mount her as he is a walking hormone bomb at the moment.

It seems so sad.

That doesn't sound good. I'm sorry I have no advice it could be because shes hormonal. If the bites or scratches are on her. The Boar must have bit/ scratched her.

Are the wounds bad?

They have drawn blood but are small cuts. I can't see the blood anywhere in the cage but they have clearly bled.

No advice from me, but hope it all works out for them

I'd be tempted to try a brief introduction once she's had her babies and everything is settled for her? Just be prepared to seperate at the first sign of tension?

Could it be scratches?

I don't know if they are bites or scratches. It all happened so fast. I charged in with my daughter and they were chasing each other about furiously. Not even sure which way round. It was so fast. We just grabbed them and separated them. Then we saw they both had wounds. None are serious injuries but we were not expecting this after all of the flirting through the bars.
