Does anyone use a dog crate as a cage for their piggies? I know people who use them to house a house bunny as a base but wondered if they make good homes for piggies with them being quite large? :)

I often bunny sit my sister's rabbit. When she comes to stay she is housed in a dog crate if the girls are out they tend to try and squeeze through after the hay I'm always a bit anxious they would go too far one day and get stuck between the bars.

Yes I do! But the sides have Correx on them so far up to protect the piggies as yes the bar spacing would be too wide otherwise. It makes a good cage for them I use fleece in mine with incontinence pads at the bottom, then a microfibre towel then the fleece. The dog crate I use is the biggest and is 48" x 30" approx. (I also have a hamster cage on top lol!) The pigs also have a 'porch' of 3x2 C&C grids too with vetbed on it.

The pics are a bit old - I now have grids instead of the playpen panels as they're much more rigid. I also have an Ikea Carrier Bag Holder as a hay rack above the litter tray which works fantastically.

I could add a second tier if I wanted to very easily but they are um, fairly lazy boars and as they have so much space as well as the crate I haven't done so.

Here's some pics of my set-up:

They love it - I think the top and sides makes it feel more secure for them. It was really easy to fit the Correx - I just cut it to size and 'wedged it' down the side of the tray the dog crate came with and used small bulldog clips to hold it to the crate at the top as you can see in the pics.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask!

They are quite happy in there.....

That looks great, the dog crate looks quite big too from the photos, happy piggies x)x)

Thank you! :))

Well the rabbits' had it as a base when they were indoors - they've now moved outside into a shed plus aviary. I decided to move the piggies out of their C&C into this set up as it meant I also have the top of the crate as a 'surface' to put one of my hamsters' cage on so it works well for us and the space we have.

They are big boar piggies (a bit fat actually; they kind of go all 'flat and round) when they lay down! :red) to give you an idea of the size of the crate lol.

Thanks! The fleece (and corner hammocks, oval bed) is from (( Hammocky Hammocks )) - all profits go to animal charities and their stuff is always fantastic quality. :))

Thanks for the good idea, I have a dog cage but was worried about using it, in case my piggies got stuck in the bars, didnt think about using correx on the bottom and sides
