My guinea pig injured her eye during a fight and it was bleeding now she can’t close it at all and it’s bulging ! The vet gave me clear eye spray ( gentamicin and dexamethasone ophthalmic solution ) is it safe for guinea pigs ?

Eye treatment is the same for all animals so I’m sure that is safe. Did you separate the piggies?
Yes of course but i read that gentamicin isn’t safe to give them orally and I couldn’t give her until i was sure .. thank you

This is how her eye looks right now and she only eats hay by her own and veggies if i forced her to eat them

Dexamethasone is a steroid. Guinea pigs shouldn't have oral steroids but I dont think it is clear whether steroid containing topical treatments are safe or not (the other health advisors may know - @PigglePuggle @Wiebke). Personally I think the eye looks so bad that I would be getting a second opinion from another vet urgently. What checks did the vet do on the eye? I just query whether a spray is going to do anything given how severe it looks. Has she been given any pain relief? I imagine that is exceedingly painful

Please weigh her daily to ensure she is eating enough hay - you cannot judge that Piggies are eating enough hay by watching them. If her weight drops then it is because she isn't eating enough hay independently and must be syringe fed a fibre rich recovery food such as oxbow critical care

That looks really painful. I agree to get a second opinion from another vet. Did she get any pain relief at all?

Poor little piggie!

I remember when Kreacher went to TEAS for treatment, his eye drops were switched from Isathal to Exocin (?) because the laceration was really bad. Not a common treatment for guinea pig eyes but it saved the eye.
A scottish visitor...
Maybe that would be possible in this case if the usual treatment hasn't helped?

No he didn’t give me anything besides the spray

Sorry about my advice earlier! Disregard it completely. Are you able to get to another vet for a second opinion? It doesn’t have to be an exotic.

That does look really sore. Can you get her seen by another vet at all?

I’m sorry. It’s difficult when you don’t have knowledgable vets or they’re few and far between. Good luck and let us know.

Have you had any luck in finding another vet?

Please do weigh every day so you can monitor exactly what is going on. You cannot tell she is eating enough hay by watching her - knowing her exactly weight or exactly fo weig her ev

OUCH! That looks sore and also dehydrated. Please see another asap.

Most vets have lubricants in stock, as eye treatment for injuries the same in all common pet species; but if not, you can get artificial plain tear gel from a pharmacy or if there is no gel, then plain tear drops for rehydration and to support the healing process in the deeper levels.
If possible, look for gel as it is longer lasting in its effect and much easier to apply. You need to wait at least half an hour after any antibiotic treatment to allow the antibiotic to be fully absorbed but you can apply the gel 3-6 times a day. Eye drops you need to apply 6 times if it is as nasty as this; ideally as close to every 4 hours as you can come with doing it first thing in the morning and last thing in the evening.
My own piggy savvy vet always adds a gel/lubricant to the necessary antibiotic grops or eye gel (I assume that that is what your spray is as well).

All the best. Take any medication you have been given and write down what treatment has happened so far, so your new vet knows where you are coming from and what has happened so far.

Where are you based - maybe another member can recommend a vet for you to try.
We have members from all over the world.
Saudi Arabia - Jeddah .. I really wish I can find any good exotic vet here 😭

Ouch! That is a hard one!

You should be able to get normal artificial teardrops without any additives in any country. Ask for choramphenicol if the spray isn't already. It is the strongest antibiotic that can be used on the eye of dogs and cats as well as guinea pigs.

Thank you so much ❤️ I will try to find it as soon as possible

Guinea pigs aren’t such a popular pet in most countries so finding an experienced vet isn’t always so easy. I hope you can get the advised meds for her.
