when i pick up PrincessConsuellaBananaHammock she squeeks, i dont think she likes it much, then when i start stroking her head she lifts up her head really fast as if to push me away?
does that mean she doesnt like me?

most piggies hate being picked up and do squeak that thing she does with her head mine do it too shes not pushing you away shes loving what youre doing and wants you to stroke her more

I read somewhere that if they shove their head upright, they don't feel comfortable with you stroking their head, and you should stop.

It doesnt mean she hates you, she just doesnt like her head being stroked! When you have her on your lap, make sure she gets a treat of some kind, like her favourite veggies. after that, try again stroking her on her head

Lucky sometimes does it if she's in a bad mood :)) but she stops after shes been out for a few minutes and has had chance to calm down and relax... and eat food :))

sometimes when I'm stroking duke or gwen, especially duke, he will vibrate, then when i stroke his head he kind of head butts my hand... ?

She is only trying to tell you what she likes and dislikes.

Many guinea pigs don't like being picked up initially - they are animals of prey and this comes too close to being taken by a predator for their instincts. Try and make a ritual out of it, by announcing it always with the same phrase. If you can, manoeuvre your girl into a tight space or a corner - the quicker you can get to her, the less she can get work up about it.

Pushing away your hand means that she doesn't like being stroked there - so don't do it and only stroke her where she is Ok with it.

Ditto the hand pushing thing is a no no. Try scratching under her chin instead. Mine prefer that.

You haven't had your guineas that long have you? They will get better and happier - honest! :)

thanks everyone, i feel better knowing that all now.
she does quite like her chin rubbed, she is the more nervous one out of the 2, monica is fine when i am holding her.
they do shout at me when they know I'm coming to feed them their veggies etc, i love it when they are shouting at me, lol.
no, i havnt had them very long, almost a week now, i know it will take time, i was just worried i was doing something wrong, and didt want to upset her or anything.

Aww, if you've only had them a week she's probably just weary. Lucky used to be like that all the time, but now she happily sits in the cage and lets you tickle her behind her ears and she sits there and kinda purrs!

Once they get used to your smell, your voice and your touch, i am sure they will settle down and love their strokes and tickles just as much as you love giving them!

When you get her out with a cuddle, try and give her a treat so that she learns to associate you with positive things.

well i think they know when i am getting their veggies and salad ready, they start shouting as i am making it in the kitchen, it makes me giggle.
they run up to the front of the cage and when i open it, they hold themselves up for their broccolli which seems to be a big hit with them.
they still run if i get to close, but it will come with time when they wont :)

I agree with the majority of what other members of the forum have said, Kaw. However, it is simply a matter of building trust. This may be achieved by regularly talking to your cavies; regularly petting your cavies; as mentioned by Lucky, by encouraging your cavies to associate your presence with something positive; when you do attempt to handle your cavies, by picking your cavies up from underneath; and by handling your cavies for small periods of time to begin with and gradually increasing the length of time in which you handle your cavies.

My guineas love a good rub behind their ears, especially my boy Ringo! I think all piggies will get used to being handled as long as you're gentle and chat away to them. Also bribery works a treat - particularly things like basil....rolleyes
