Hi,
this is the xth forum I'm writing on, without any luck so far - maybe someone here knows what's up?

I've got 2 guinea pigs - 8month old brothers, Ruben and Tesla. I've got a "problem" with Tesla.

I'll start from the beginning.
Since I first got them, Tesla sometimes sneezed a little, he got vitamin C and after that it was over for a while.
In december, Ruben had ear inflammation, he got antibiotics and pulled through, he's ok since then.
In January Tesla started to sneeze some more, there's always some watery discharge from his right nostril. During eating he makes this wheezing sound. The vet saw him, listened to his breathing, checked everything - his heart and lungs are ok and clean. He suggested it could be an allergy. I was supposed to continue giving vit. C, which I did.

At the end of February, Tesla started tilting his head and was a bit on the down side - now he got the ear inflammation. He was treated with ear drops and antibiotics. The ear healed, but Tesla still has a runny right nostril, sometimes his right eye is watery. I took him 4 more times for check ups, he got metacam - although that didn't help that much. I went to another vet, I told what I knew and again I heard it might be an allergy.

He never had an xray.
His ear infection was treated with Baytril for 7 days 1ml/day. The ear drops were called Surolan (he got it for 10 days).
The first week he got Baytril and ear drops. The second week only ear drops. After 5 days of getting Baytril I think he looked normal (his nose too). After finishing the Baytril doses and the ear drops his ear was fine and head stopped tilting so much. I know it might be unreversable, because he was so young and still growing, but the nose got runnig again. Because of that the vet decided to give him Metacam 1ml/day for 10 days. But it made no visible difference. The second vet said it look like it is an allergy.

Tesla since the beginning has a healthy appetite, he weighs 1200g, poops normally, and loves to stretch out in various positions but he still has that runny nose and sometimes covered with small crusty bits (which I clean of course), the same with his eye. He still wheezes as he eats.

Today I noticed that his neck skin seems a bit saggy(but in comparison, his bottom was saggy from the beginning) and I think I felt some kind of small lump through the skin. Besides that everything seems fine. Since the beginning the piggies are on a dry bed with absorbing pads under. I wash these drybeds each 4-6 days in non-allergic soap, without fabric softener.

I try to patch him up with vitamin C, probiotics and ribworts tea which he eagerly drinks (and its supposed to help with respiratory problems). I'd be grateful for any piece of advice.

Hi and welcome!

Could you please add your country, state or (for the UK) to your details, so we can adapt any medical advice to what is available where you are. We have members from all over the world, so medical brands can differ. It can also help us to take your local climate into account, which may play a role. Please click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. thank you!

Could you please answer these questions for me, so we can take the different aspects into account:
How piggy savvy is your vet?

What bedding are your piggies on and what hay are you using? Do you have currently got a high pollen count? Do you have air conditioning or incense in the room or are they outside piggies? Are they in a drafty spot? How has the ear infection been treated in both cases (could you please name the medication/dosage, if possible)?

Is the nasal discharge/crusts clear or yellowish/greenish? If the discharge is clear, then it point rather towards an irritation or allergy (rhinitis), if it thick and yellowish, it is caused by a bacterial infection (URI).

I am tagging our medications specialist for you, but please be aware that it is a weekend, so it may take a while until you get an answer.
