Does my guinea pig have cheilitis? My local vet prescribed antibiotic and not sure that’s the right thing ..

Cheilitis shows as scabs around the lips.
It is usually bacterial meaning antibiotics are right treatment. However it can sometimes be fungal.

If you are concerned then you can call the vet for clarification or get a second opinion from another vet.

You should also check the diet - acidic foods such as fruit and tomatoes can cause cracks in the skin which allow bacteria in thus causing cheilitis. Making sure you don’t feed those foods can help reduce the risk.

Guinea Lynx :: Cheilitis

Hi and welcome

It doesn't look like a classic cheilitis. Could it just be something dried sticking to the side of the mouth?

Whether cheilitis is bacterial, fungal or microbial depends on what kind germ gets through tiny cracks in the skin of the lips that are generally caused by too much fruit acidity in the diet (including tomatoes).

What antibiotic is your piggy on?

Thank you. She is on baytril.
i suppose it started off looking like a small cut and I started by just wiping it with some water, but then it seemed to get worse and scabby like as in the picture, so I took her to the vet at that point
