Before purchasing I read that Megazorb can smell - I just bought a sack of it and it stinks - smells like cheese. Certainly wasn't prepared for that. :( Have sprinkled it sparingly for the moment but had intended to use it for the whole cage. But with it being indoors - it's not something I care to smell.

How often does a bag tend to smell?

I thought my bag smells but it wasn't overbearing. This is the first bag I've bought though and I have to keep inside as well, and me and my OH have got used to it.

I'm sure a more regular user will come along soon and let you know if this is a usual thing with Megazorb :)

I thought the smell was vile so I stopped buying it too. It's pretty standard for it to smell like yoghurt or cheese I believe. I didn't find it particularly absorbent and it wasn't very good at disguising or locking in the smell of urine for more than a day or two so no big loss.

As far as I know the smell is the heating process to get rid of some of the spores in wood - not sure but that what it smells like to me - slightly heated wood.

As for the absorbency - well I did my own "non scientific" :red test with Megazorb, shavings (top quality), newspaper & hay and a sort of pelleted recycled paper.

Without a doubt the megazorb was far more absorbent than any of the rest. Shavings were the worst (but smelt lovely all the time), newspaper and hay meant my piggies bums were wet, the pelleted paper stuff seemed OK, but it was hard on their feet and they didn't like to sit anywhere near it.

I use fleece over towels and newspaper for the main areas, but do put a layer of megazorb in their litter trays with loads of hay on top. I don't notice the smell now, but do change the trays outside and I change them every day. I also wash the litter trays twice a week.

I can put up with the smell if the piggies bums are dry :)

I use megazorb now and out of all the beddings i have tried, have found it the most hygienic and absorbent so I am surprised?

When I first put it in it does smell a little yoghurty but after an hour or so the smell went. However they are in an outdoor shed and I leave the door open during the day weather permitting so perhaps that is why?

I have tried medibed and flax and I have now come back to megazorb due to its absorbent properties and ability to mask odours. In addition I also have a little hamster who (to put it politely) stank when it was clean out time, and I mean really pungent when he was on shavings. I also changed him to megazorb and he is kept indoors with little ventilation and no odour whatsoever....he loves it (burrows and chucks it everywhere!). Big fan...

Had the horse on megazorb and all of my bags smelt like that yuck, Now have the horse on woodpellets and guinea pigs also. I put a layer under newspaper and fleece. Works reallywell and doesnt hurt their tootsies. I lightly sprinkle it with water first though
