Ok it's been 5 days since I introduced Cadbury to my boys...things have pretty much sort of settled down. There is still alot of chattering and rumblestrutting going on but it only develops into a full blown fur fest once or twice a day now...I'm hoping this means they are starting to settle down again.

I am going to bath the boys again this week end...at the same time, I think I made the mistake of bathing them individually the last time.

I've been doing some reading and there us some suggestion that DAP seems to work...has anyone tried it? So the plan is...clean out and disinfect their cage (again), do some feng shui on their toys, get some cosy beds to replace their current housing, bath and some freeplay time...if this doesn't work I don't know what else to try.

that is pretty much the same as what I'm going to do when i get a new baby boar for my bigun that lost his mate saturday, so id say you were on the right track, I'm no expert tho, but id say youre doing all you can gemx

It most certainly did not work on my dog. I don't know if it is safe or not for pigs, but if you find out it is, and want to give it a go, let me know. Please don't spend £20? on a spray, I have a good half bottle here you could have. xx

(Although if it supposed to produce the same smell as a nursing *****? Would a pig recognise that?) lol

How big is the cage? I know 140cm is recommended for 3 sows/ 2 sows & 1 boar but for boars I think they need bigger.

Have they got a bowl & water each as well.
Moving things round and disinfecting plus bathing them together should help:)

Thank you for all the replies...sorry I haven't replied sooner but I was out all day with my best mate and my goddaughter...and I bought a car lol!

I do have separate food bowls and i meant to get an extra water bottle today but it decided to bucket down with rain so I will get one tomorrow. I don't know how big the cage is...unfortunately I've packed my measure ready for moving. I do know it's a bit bigger than the largest one they do in PAH for two full grown piggies.

Nutmeg - I would be able to make use of your DAP...how much do you want for it? Please could you email me: [email protected]

Thank you!

Hiya,

I work with rescue dogs. In my experiance I've found that the DAP works for some dogs really well, for others little or no effect. There is also a cat version of this, but I have no experiance of using it.

Is there a guinea pig version? :{ I'd be interested in learning more if there is. The smell released is to mimic the hormonal smell from the mother whilst pups/kittens are nursing and at their most relaxed. Unless the smell is specifically aimed at guinea pigs I can't imagine their would be much benefit.

This is the dog one that I have, we got it when we rescued a big daft lurcher. The most amazing dog, but had horrendous separation anxiety. It didn't work! He ate my house.
Do please chat to your vet before using it for guinea pigs to be sure. x

Vedra's book lists DAP as one option to help fighting boars calm down. A unit plugged in at the wall for a few days (then switched off) has apparently proven effective in all but two cases over six years. The air flow in the room has to be checked though so the pheromones go through the cage. All info is taken from Vedra's book, I can quote it exactly if anyone is interested.

Don't know whether it works, my boys have a sedate enough relationship as it is. :))

Thank you!

Have sent you my address via PM Nutmeg.

At this point I'm willing to try anything! I've got the new waterbottle but I can't get the cozy cavy beds I wanted...everywhere I've tried has sold out but my local petfood store stocks a small range if pet beds and are going to order me two.

Cavy Couture & Pimp My Piggy Palace are worth checking out they have some gorgeous ones (or you can design your own at Cavy Couture)

That's really interesting Laura, thanks for the info. x>> My sister has a trio of young males, so should problems break out, I'll pass along the advice.

Well things are gradually settling down...maybe one fight a day now. So
maybe the big feng shui project I've earmarked for tomorrow should put a line under it all.

On to good news...when Bugsy and Snickers were having cuddle time...Cadbury raced round the cage 3 times at speed pop corning like mad and bouncing off tatty bear...I think he was happy lol!

That's really interesting. I wish I'd known about this when my boars were fighting :(

Does Vedra recommend this as an option as long as they haven't drawn blood? I take it the usual advice still applies, that once blood is drawn they should be separated and there's not really any solution at that stage - is that correct?

Can DAP be used as a preventative measure also? i.e. when boars are first put together, for bonding? Or is that not advisable?

I'd be really interested to know what other options Vedra recommends for calming down fighting boars.

And are DAPs noticeable to humans at all?

Sorry for so many questions! x

When I had the plug in, I couldn't tell it was there. When I have used the spray, I could smell it a little initially, but then it wore off, but presumably was still able to be smelled on the bedding by the dog. x

My boars had a fight and drew blood so we separated them for a couple of hours, then brought them into neutral territory, cleaned the cage and bathed them- then they settled down!
