I am currently using sawdust in the hutch but am changing to Megazorb today.

After chatting to some mums at the school this morning, it seems most people just put down a thick layer of newspaper and then a layer of hay.

They say this is fine and so much easier to clean.

Would this work? Would it be cosy enough for them?

Does anyone else do away with the bedding material?

Thanks

I use newspaper sawdust and I put hay in their little house thing and also in the feeding box that is attached to the side of the cage. i am thinking about switching to fleece tho x

I have done in the past, but it's not very effective really - if you do that you really need pretty much a full change every day, as it all gets very dirty/wet.

I did that for 15 years, when I had piggies at my parents. With a lone pig (which is what we had, not the same one all along though!), it lasted 1/2 week. They all loved hiding in their hay on the first couple of days. They also tended to only do the toilet in 1 or 2 ares so they could munch on the rest. It's also much easier to roll up in the newspaper than woodshavings which tend to end up in your shoes, on the floor, etc...

I'm now using fleece and have therefore reduced the cost of hay (but increased the electricity bill for the washing machine).

Thank you all. I have been thoroughly cleaning the hutch twice a week (Wed and Sun) and have just changed to megazorb. They seem very excited at the moment, very hyper and popcorning all around the hutch!

I don't think just hay and newspaper would seem so cosy if you see what I mean?

I'll see how it goes I think.

Bedding

I try many types, shredded news paper, saw dust, hays, thick boxes, the Eco straw but they got all the red swollen feet so now I've been using towels and underneat some Scott towels(which absorb the liquid from their pee) which I change every other day. They seems to be more comfortable with it and their feet are no longer reddish.they sleep on the upper level which I only put some small towel and I put some straw on the corner where they pee and poop. I am still looking for an alternative to make it more easier for me so any recommendation will be a huge help.

I use just newspaper with a hay pile in two corners so they don't fight over it. They also have hay in a rack because I don't like the thought of them eating hay they've peed on :D It does get dirty quickly and needs changing every day/every other day depending on whether they spend most of the day in the garden or not... But I find it much cheaper and easy to clean than woodshavings or fleece and they absoluely adore popcorning around their hay piles.

I use newspaper and hay outside for my outside 2 guineas and 1 rabbit - but do add a layer of megazorb in Leo bunny's nest box which he uses as a loo.

In summer I add a layer of megazorb in the guineas hutch if I have it spare.

Find this works well - I do full cleans Sun and Weds at the moment and every other day in summer.

Indoors I use megazorb foe Monty guinea and Dudley hamster, finds it works really well, they seem to like it.

Get mine form Farmaway, about £8 a bag and £5 delievery a bag, need to check with a local horse tack shop see if they can get any in but that does mean asking my Dad to take me as I don't drive.

I'm lucky that our green waste bin will take the hay and megazorb March - October and I put newspapers in the recycle bin - apart from any really soggy ones.
