I was relying on my Mum to supply newspapers for the gang, however she is off on holiday for six weeks. I don't really get the chance to buy a paper everyday and will run out!

I can buy lots of cheap papers once a week which might work but I wondered if anyone did without?

I am aiming to build a C and C cage so it will be on correx. I could line it with Vinyl. Might do that anyway even if I stick with paper.

Cheers

I also just use towels and fleece in one cage and sawdust on it's own in another I've never really found a need to use newspaper :)

Just a thought, i get mine from where i work, a nursing home and there are only a few residents that have papers but they soon build up, maybe you could ask at a nursing home or residential home near to you if you could take them for a few weeks?

You could always use cheap puppy pads instead while your mum is away. Not too expensive from Home bargains or B & M

I ask my neighbours...they always seems happy to be able to recycle their papers this way. :)
I just say to put them in my front porch as they go past...easier for them and for me.

I used to use newspaper under the shavings etc but found it actually makes their wee spread across the bottom of the cage, without paper now their wee just stays in patches and is easier to spot clean :)

I'm switching to fleece (today, yay!) but with the shavings I never used newspapers on the bottom of the C&C. I read news online now to it is a good thing I don't have to find newspapers.

Yippee!

There is a whole world of people who don't use newspapers! Great!

And I agree on the whole newspaper wee spreading thing, you know I never considered using just sawdust on it's own. Now you have said it makes much more sense than newspapers.

So I went to Sainsburys (petsathome and home bargains are miles away) and figured I would experiment with their (very expensive) puppy pads, I like the idea of them. If it works out then I will make a trip to PAH or HB.

Am I right in thinking that I just put the puppy pads on the floor of the cages and just add hay and guinea pigs?

thank you

xx:)

It is not recommended? I think some people believe sawdust or wood shavings cause breathing problems in animals? It is one of those things some owners follow and some don't.

My stuff is called wood shavings, but I have no idea what the difference is.

I rely on other people for papers as well and when I ran out used my kids roll of paper - the cheap rolls you get from ikea for drawing on and putting on an easel or plain lining paper for wallpapering a wall from any DIY store. I have found this to be really cheap and i only need one layer of it and it lasts as well as any newspaper to absorb the wee under my megazorb. Tried puppy pads but they were so expensive and didn;t get any better results than the paper to be honest.

Yeah sawdust is a no-no but wood shavings are okay.

Some owners will disagree with using woodshavings but I have ALWAYS used woodshavings and I have never had a problem with breathing problems!
