Hi
Could anyone tell me do guinea pigs store food ? I've just discovered 2 neat piles of nuggets at the back of my girls cage . Is this likely to be the pigs there's no sign of rats or mice 😬

Are you sure they’re nuggets and not poop? I’ve not heard of piggies storing pellets. Though they will sometimes leave half eaten veg to return to if I give them something they prefer...

I've seen my group grab a piece of veg and then return to grab another but the always go back and eat it afterwards. I have never seen pellets stored, although sometimes if there has been a bit of fun and games in the run they may have tipped over the bowl and kicked them everywhere.

Is it possible they tipped a bowl over? Are you sure it's food pellets and not poop pellets? LOL! I've never had guinea pigs hoard food in this way (though many have tried to drag the food bowl along with them by biting it and backing up to try to keep it all to themselves.) Because they don't don't have dexterity in their paws like mice/rats/hamsters, it's a lot harder for them to carry food and deposit it somewhere else. It's also less wired into them than, say, a mouse or hamster, because wild mice and hamsters have a territory with burrows where they can hide food, whereas wild guinea pigs basically walk and graze all the time. I'm interested if you can catch them in action to see how this is happening! Let us know if you figure it out!

Maybe they dont like the pellets? I've seen my lot hide food they dislike in the hope that something better comes along! Orange peppers and butternut squash used to regularly get stashed and hidden so they wouldnt have to eat them, until I found out what they were up to!

Unusual. I haven't seen mine do this. You will have to update us as to how this has occurred.

It's most definitely nuggets ! Nearly piled up ! None there this morning so I'm a bit baffled . They have been getting their morning greens later than normal so I'm wondering if they are storing food just in case 😁! ! The bars on there hutch is quite small so I can't see a rat getting possibly a mouse but surely a mouse would eat it not pile it up !? If it carries on I shall take them out of the cage and see if it carries on .
Thanks for replies
