setting my boys up in c&c cages. I’m looking at making my own cage liners (probably 2x4)

I’ve been looking, and I can’t seem to figure out what exactly people are putting in the middle for the absorbent layer?

I’m guessing the top and bottom are fleece? Where is the cheapest place to get fleece and the middle layer?

I’m in the UK. So if you could post some links for me? It would be greatly appreciated!

I use a top layer of fleece and a cheap mattress liner for the bottom. You could sandwich a mattress liner between two pieces of fleece if you prefer, but I just do one sided. You can also use towel for the middle. I get the mattress liners in IKEA (only about £5 or £6 depending on size). You can get fleeces cheaply in The Range or B&M, both have a good selection and sizes. I buy a set of 2 in B&M, as they are matching (one patterned and one plain), so you can match or contrast pads or tunnels too. The two red ones are the matching set, and the blue one is one which I bought from a fabric shop

I use zorb as a middle layer or mattress protectors. I did try a washable incontenance pad but it was quite heavy. Zorb is best but pricey so I use it in smaller mats and put matress protector in the cage liners.

Get fleece, zorb and matress protectors from ebay.

Honestly, I just bought mine from https://piggybedspreads.com/ but i'd like to say, they aren't the cheapest! Still, they are pretty absorbent and they have some other cool stuff for your piggies besides just cage liners, I got 2 large cage liners and one large forest curtain and plus, a free potty pad, sadly that was all $131. As I said, they aren't cheap!

Just regular mattress protectors?

Hi guys, so you’ve inspired me to make my own cage liners. Is there any benefit to putting a fleece layer under the protector, or is that just for looks?
Would it be better to have two layers of fleece on top of the protector do you think?
Thanks

The purpose of the fleece is to wick away moisture, so a double layer wouldn't really do anything extra. Putting a layer of fleece on both sides of the protector is a matter of choice....it does make the liner reversible though, which mine are not. Lots of the places which sell them do this with different patterns on either side so you can ring the changes. For me, it's just a bit of a hassle.

Ah I see, ok makes sense now. Thanks :)

Just one other piece of advice. Wash your fleece a few times before you make them so that it wicks and also gets any shrinkage out of the way. And remember to post some pics when you're done!.

Thanks so much. I’ve found the anti pill fleece on eBay and I’ll be getting sewing machine out the loft at the weekend!

@Reenie one more question please ;)
I’m not sure on the mattress protector, one is waterproof, do you think that’s good? Would you mind checking out these links and giving me your advice please ?

Thanks!
The first one looks great, and is similar to the ones I use. The second one wouldn't be any good as you don't want waterproof because it's purpose is to absorb the wee when it comes through the fleece. They actually work better when they've been washed (no conditioner).

Ok thanks very much :)

I pre shrink the mattress cover as well, just in case it shrinks at a different rate to the fleece. I learnt this the hard way, I had some pee pads distort out of shape on washing! I hope you enjoy your sewing, I love making things for the piggys.

So basically just wash it at about 40 degrees first, or hotter?
