hi all, i have a question to those of you who have multiple piggies and use woodshavings/hay in the toilet areas/hutches/where ever.

now i have 6 piggys again (after the death of three i rehomed another three from a busy local rescue,so now we have 3 indoor gp areas) and use a mix of fleece in their sleeping areas, and woodshavings and hay on all other parts of their runs (the runs are all 2m by 1.5m in size) so as you can imagine i go through a lot of hay and shavings!

now can the soiled dirty hay and shavings be put on the garden? or in the compost heap? or even burned? i used to throw it in the bin but I'm filling like 3 black bags a week with the stuff so looking for an alternative! (i also keep chickens and chinchillas so obviously also have a few bags full of soiled shavings from their areas too!)

You can compost it, or use it as a mulch for fruit trees and bushes - composting takes 2 complete seasons to complete though

Composting is good. Animal poop adds heat to the compost heap. You need to have a balanced heap to add to the efficiency of the heap. there are loads of websites on the net. It does take a while, but make sure you compost everything you can;
Cardbord,
Egg boxes,
Vegetable/Fruit remains,
Animal droppings,
Cotton Wool,
Insides of nappies/st (if you have a strong stomach!),
Garden waste,
Hair Clippings,
Urine (again, if you have a strong stomach!)

Just make sure you do NOT put meat, fish, clothes or plastics in your compost bin. As long as it is not any of those categories, you can compost it!

We compost ours but have filled two large compost bins in a couple of months. We still have to throw some in the bin (and the neighbours'). We've had to resort to incinerating most of it (you can then put the ash on the garden).

I have 3 bags a day of hay ,nedzbed and wet newspaper. the paper goes in the non re cycle bin and the other in the green garden waste down at the tip. The men there were very funny about the hay etc. but now let me put it in the big green skip .it composts down okay.
