Hi there, I was thinking of adopting a rabbit(s). However having three piggies I done some research and found that rabbits can give pigs a disease? Respiratory or something similar, can it be treated? I have had bunnies and pigs before and had no problem. They will be in different cages but in the same bedroom, with no physical contact. Any ideas on this?

Thanks

I could put bunnies in shed outside so they are completely away from piggies but I would prefer them indoors.

Bordetella bronchiseptica is the bacteria, dogs can carry this as well and the dogs often have close contact with them (through wire) non aggressive

Yup, if i remember corectly thats the one in Bex,s post, The RSPCA did a report on it a wile ago

nice spelling Bex :tu:

i asked our vet about this when i was decided on getting piggies, due to the fact both my rabbits had respiratory infections at the time, although through testing we knew they weren't bordetella, although rabbits can be carriers and affect guinea pigs anyway... he said it's no more of a risk then if you keep any different species together. so if you let dogs near the piggies, the risks are the same as if you let rabbits near. the reason rabbits get the bad press for it is because many people used to keep rabbits and piggies together.

my piggies have always been in the same room as the rabbits and we have never had any issues. but there is always some small risk. but no more than if you kept any different species within the same air space :)

this was the advice we received from our specialist vet anyway :)

I have 3 rabbits who are all vaccinated each year who are free range in my lounge room. In that room also live in their hutches my 8 piggies and 2 hamsters who all have floor time and love the rabbits.

One of my female rabbit who considers herself the Mumma of all of them cleans every single piggy when they come out at floor time. They just stand their while she does it and then she moves on to the next. It is so funny and cute to watch :xd:

Plus we have a 6 month old puppy (who is also vaccinated) and she also plays with them all.

We have had no health issues and were also advised by our specialist vet that there is always a slight risk when you have any species together but nothing to be majorly concerned about. Obviously we ensure that they all receive good food and exercise and medical care should they need it.

We had two piggies who contracted Bordetella, despite having no contact whatsoever with bunnies or any other species. Go figure.

All I will say is that if Bordetella is ever suspected, very prompt action is required - even with immediate treatment, it was touch and go for a time. Injected Marbocyl seemed to work best. Both piggies did recover, but were much more fragile afterwards.

I two have a rabbit with my guinea pigs which share !, they all love each other and get along just fine,
I don't think you such worry about that.

My pigs and buns live in the same shed (separate hutches) they are always in and out of each others hutches scavenging food, I've never had a problem. ;)
