Should u clean guinea pigs bums if they have urine staining

Should u clean guinea pigs bums if they have urine staining

Hi

Please give them a bum bath with plain baby warm water in a basin that is sitting on the shower floor or the bath tub (prevents injuries from freak jumps and manic escapes. Fill up no more than 1-2 inches. Make sure that they they warm and out of drafts while drying off. The bath won't remove any stains but neither will any shampoo.
If the mess is not too bad, then a gentle wipe with a damp baby warm rag will do.

The guide links contain all the practical how to tips:

Bathing (including cleaning grease glands)

If you have long-haired piggies, then please cut the hairs around the genitalia and legs short to minimise soiling an matting.

I would leave any short-haired sow that is able to clean herself within 1-2 days be but give a trim and if then still needed a bath to any long-haired sows. Quite often a judicious trim will actually do the trick without requiring a bath.

Any older piggies or piggies with mobility issues that struggle with cleaning the bum or picking up poos from their anus for eating will profit from you giving them a helping hand with keeping their bum end clean when they no longer can do it themselves.

You may want to keep the bit that keeps getting messy and matted cut shorter with a regular trim. It will make life easier for you and your piggy. ;)

The hair will always grow back to its genetically determined length, no matter whether you have a short-hair, a long-hair or a piggy with mixed heritage.
