My pet guinea pig Rudolph was playing when he suddenly let out this ear piercing sound I have never heard a guinea pig make. I went over to him and saw him laying there on his side shaking very violently. It really scared me and I don't known of I was a seizure or not. Does anyone know if he had a seizure? If so how can I help him? I am saving up the money to take him to the vet so that will also be happening in the future.

Possibly but we can’t know for sure.
How far in the future is it before you can get him to a vet? Any seizures require immediate vet care, its not something which can wait

How is he now?
Is he still eating hay?
Switch to daily weight checks so you can more closely monitor his hay intake so you can step in with syringe feeding sooner

Hi!

I can only guess with having to rely entirely on your report that it rather sounds like a seizure.
You have pretty much answered your own question - please see a vet as soon as possible although it is generally difficult to diagnose them or work out the reasons. As an emergency if he is lethargic and/or off food.

Keep your piggy as quiet and normal as possible and avoid stressing them out with lots of handling etc. Switch from the usual life long once weekly weigh in to weighing daily in order to monitor the food intake (you cannot control the 80% of hay a piggy eats in a hay by eye only). Step in with feeding support if necessary.

I hope Rudolph has recovered from this incident. Is he ok now?

It will be about a month before I can get him to the vet. He is sort of back to himself just a little tired although has eaten some hay but not quite as much as before.I will do all the things you have reccomended. Thankyou. What should I do if he does that again before I can get him to the vet?

He just tired now it seems, but otherwise he seems back to himself. He is eating a little less hay, but not too bad. So far the only really unusual behavior thing he is doing is constantly wanting to be by my side. I don't mind that much, I like it. Otherwise he seems back to himself. Thankyou!

Can any family or friends lend you the money to see the vet sooner? A month is a long time to wait.

:agr: Please speak to family and friends to see if you can borrow money. Or speak to the vet and see if they’ll agree to a payment plan. If he does it again I’m afraid a vet is the only Avenue. You can’t really do anything for him. Bear in mind that it may actually be longer than a month as by the time you have saved the money and get him booked in, there may not be any available appointments at that time. All the best.

PS please can you put your country on your profile, rather than just ‘country’. It makes it easier when giving you advice.
