My little chap has been receiving just palliative care following his lymphoma diagnosis. He’s been quieter but still enthusiastic for food. However last week his breathing increased suddenly and although it had calmed down during the drive to the vet he was prescribed doxycycline for a suspected respiratory tract infection. I was giving him Pro-C after each dose but yesterday (Thursday) he had full blown diarrhoea. I spoke with the vet - an exotics - and stopped the antibiotics yesterday and moved to regular syringe feeding plus 1ml Fibreplex 3 times a day. No veg or grass. After his feed he does have a little hay. His weight is stable so far and today his poops are very soft but not runny. How quickly would you expect antibiotic linked diarrhoea to clear up if following a critical care/probiotic regime? I‘m trying to decide what’s best for the little chappie.

HUGS

I am very sorry. Doxy is rather known for upsetting the tummy but it is in vet often considered to be the most effective antibiotic for respiratory issues although there are alternative antibiotics.

Please keep in mind the antibiotics build up to maximum efficiency and then gradually peter out again in the days after the course has finished. This unfortunately means that you have to hang in there for the time being until after the end of the course. If the reaction is very strong and your piggy is very poorly, please contact your vet.

All the best.
