Hi, so yesterday I got some very sad, but expected news. My sow Delilah is just two months shy of 7 years old and has been having breathing issues on and off for a couple of months now.

Her breathing is laboured, her sides move faster and with more effort than normal, and sometimes she can get a stuffy nose which is very loud (doesn't sound like hooting, it's more congested sounding) she has also been steadily losing weight and is a 'pancake pig' who lays flat all the time, unwilling to move much. Her symptoms are intermittent also, one day she can struggle and the next be totally fine.

We initially thought it was a URI so treated her with antibiotics, which actually helped a bit, but her issues came back after finishing the course. My vet suspected heart problems so we xrayed and did a heart scan ultrasound yesterday and she was found to have an enlarged heart, dialated cardiomyopathy specifically.

So she has heart disease, but is not so bad that she needs euthanasia or anything at this time, she is still bright, alert and LOVES to eat, so that's good enough for me to try her on heart medication and see how she goes which the vet agreed, hopefully it'll work. I'm already seeing some improvement, the difference before and after medication is noticible.

She's getting 0.5ml of Frusol and 1/4 tablet of Cardisure twice per day, as well as metacam for arthritis. The issue is, I can't get her to take the Cardisure tablet, the vet said to slide it behind her front teeth, however Delilah is quite a sassy and stressy pig, it's nearly impossible for me to do this, I've tried every way possible. I was trying for 30 minutes last night, she tries every kung fu move possible to avoid it, she's so fast I'm not quick enough, when I do finally get it in her mouth she immediately spits it back out.

Because she is a heart pig and gets extremely stressed, I feel really mean and uncomfortable forcing this on her, I worry she'll have a heart attack or something. I did manage to get it in wrapped in a piece of lettuce, but she spat it back out. It went in and out of her mouth so many times that it became mush so I was able to smear it on cucumber and she ate it then.

This morning I had to hide it inside a small piece of tomato and she took it without questions, so this seems to work better, however Delilah is incredibly smart and has worked out that I'm trying to trick her with veggies lol, I can't see this trick working for long.

The tablets are made for dogs and have a strong beef smell and flavour, which is making it harder for me as she hates it, it would probably be better if they were unflavoured but as they're made for dogs I don't think that's possible. Looking online it says not to give these tablets with food for dogs, I don't know if this is the same for piggies. I don't know if my tactic of giving it with food is affecting the medication from working properly.

Am I allowed to hide these tablets in food, or crush in water and syringe it to her instead? Delilah has to take these tablets for the rest of her life, this is going to be a challenge, she's just too smart and sassy lol. Thanks

No expertise here at all but it looks like it's going to be a bit of a challenge as it seems these things are not soluble in water. If she were mine I think I might try crushing and suspending in a very small volume of something like apple juice in a syringe (or 50:50 with water) so that she starts to realise it's not all bad and hopefully gets used to her routine. Apart from the faff of smearing it on veggies there is the thought that she'll get suspicious of her cucumber or her lettuce in the future as she'll never know whether the piece is untainted with beefy flavour. I don't routinely syringe juice etc because of the sugar but she's an old girl with a dicky ticker and I'd be thinking it's the lesser of two evils. Hopefully she will too? I admire your spirit Delilah!

I am sure that one of the health experts will be along with some advice soon. I have always been told by the vet to crush tablets in a little water and then give by syringe. We did this with Vetmedin for our heart piggy George and i believe that this is just a different brand name for Cardisure.

I've never had to give cardisure but have had some luck crushing tablets and suspending in a bit of water and syringing them as the others have said 😊

Along with @YvonneBlue I can confirm we crushed our Cardisure and made a suspension with water, this was suggested by our vet. Our Flubs did very well with this for a number of months, much more palatable!

Worth noting you need to shake it very well, so ask the vet if you can have a spare medicine bottle to do this in.

Hi, my heart piggy Pom Pom has 1/4 benazapet tablet once a day. I don't know how they compare size wise to your tablets but I find the easiest way is to use a 1ml syringe with the end cut off. The 1/4 tablet just fits in nicely, I then pop it in her mouth like I would liquid meds, so quite far back and she crunches it up. If I accidently pop it in too near the front she spits it out but at the back she doesn't seem to mind at all.

Good luck. I hope you manage to find a way to get it in her. If only these piggies would realise we are trying to help them.

Thank you guys, for her PM dose tonight I'll try crushing it with water and syringing it if she won't take the veggie trick again. I'll get some pure apple juice or something too just to make it taste better, these are likely to be the last months of her life so I want it to be as pleasant as possible for her.

I can tell by the smell how awful this must taste so I understand Delilah's disapproval lol! I'm glad she still has her sense of humour and making everything as hard for me as possible, she has always been this way with everything, meds, nail trims, baths etc, the moment she submits and let's me do these things I'll know something is wrong... bless her heart

I always give tablets in this way! My video on medicating shows me giving a tablet 😊

You make it look so easy! 😂 Love the critical care idea with the syringe too, I'm going to attempt that later... The tomato trick worked again this morning but not as well, I quartered a tomato, found a juicy one, pushed the tablet into it and then let her eat it. She didn't notice before, but this morning she kept eating the tomato and spitting the tablet out haha, it took all 4 pieces of tomato and she finally ate it, so cheeky. 😂

I'm having trouble cutting up her pills too, the pills are tiny themselves and she gets 1/4 of a tablet, the tablet is soft and easy to break apart with my hands but the problem is all the quarters aren't equal, some are bigger than others, I worry about over or under dosing with that. Any ideas where I can go out and pick up a pill cutter today?

Good luck with the tablet, she’s a very clever little old lady ❤️ is there any similar heart tablets that don’t taste beefy?

I'm not exactly sure, I'll have to ask the vet if there's an alternative for her condition... Tonight I tried the critical care syringe trick, it worked for the most part, the tablet goes soggy and breaks apart quickly so some fell out of the syringe, but I'll have to push it in further next time lol, I think this method will work for her ❤

Delilah has been taking her meds very well with the critical care syringe trick! However today her breathing seems especially hard and laboured, but she is still laid infront of the pellet bowl with her face firmly implanted into it eating all of the pellets nonstop... she even stood up and ran across to the other side of the cage at full speed with her prized oxbow vitamin C cookie! She doesn't want to be caught today either and will run away from me lol.

It is hard seeing her struggle, but she is still eating, drinking, pooping well etc, has actually gained weight rather than lost (up to 1043g from 973g), so I'm not sure what to think, should I worry or just leave her be? She has a check up and rescan next week anyway to see if the meds have helped, but I guess there will be days where she'll struggle a little more now, she'll never stop eating though, bless her.

I don't want to worry you but you need to be wary of sudden weight gain in a heart piggy, especially if it is out of the ordinary. It can mean that they are retaining fluid, so do keep an eye on her.
