Hi my 2 year old guinea pig had its back teeth operated on a week and a half ago, as they said they were overgrown slightly at the back. When she came home she eating odd bits of food some days and hardly anything on other days she is still very quiet and mainly staying in her bed, she also has only attempted once briefly her water bottle she hasn't gone near it for days and having to syringe feed her
to get water in her and to top her food up. She eaten abit better yesterday bit hasn't had anyting today. Has anyone else had anything similar she was on 6 diffrent medications which have only just finished three days ago and metacam two days ago.

Realistically if the teeth were just overgrown then she should be feeling better by now.
Is there a chance there is something else going on? Did she have any x-rays?

Sometimes dentals can be done by the wrong people, and I can imagine there are quite a few things that could go wrong if not done correctly.
I have heard some cases of teeth being cut too short, but I imagine that is quite rare.
It is great that you stepped in with support feeding, if it were me I would be getting my girl back in to get some painkillers and to work out what is going wrong.

If the dental was done correctly and there was nothing else going on she should realistically be feeling better by now.
Fingers crossed your girl begins to feel better soon, hopefully someone with more experience will along soon x

Thanks for your reply, this is what i was worried about it not being done correctly and was wondering about them being done to short. They did xrays and was an exotic vets. I took her to my local vets they had a look but said they couldn't see anything so took her to a exotic vets they did the operation and kept her in two days she seemed slightly better for a few days but not perfect but just thought it was while she was healing or feeling off with the medication. I feel annoyed that they may have not done the job properly they changed me over £850 x

I’m sorry to hear this.
£850 is really quite expensive, I have paid £165 for a dental and x-ray with GA once, but it depends where you live and which vet you go to.

How is she doing now?
You can always give the vets a phone, let them know what’s going on.

She's still the same thanks, she had a little bit of food but been in her house all day. She sqeeked before when I opened the fridge and came to the edge looking, like she used to do, but when I gave her something she just took it and dropped it then went back in her house. Vets is in manchester. My local vets chaged £100 to look in her mouth. These chaged £256 for anesthetic then £58 for the dental work £168 for xray then the rest was for staying in for 2 nights and the medication, I was shocked at the price! But will ring them tomorrow to say see what they say x

Hi have you tried cutting her veg into thin strips - this can sometimes help with dental pigs. You could also offer some banana if you have it.
Did the vets give you any syringe food to feed her? If not, you could try making some mashed pellets and offering some via a syringe. There's a syringe feeding guide here: Complete Syringe Feeding Guide

Hi yes I have been syringe feeding her thanks for the information, i did cut her veg up and she eaten bits of it for a couple of days but not eating it at all now

So did her refusal to eat cut up bits of veg coincide with the end of her pain relief?

They just said there were slight ulceration and teeth were abit over grown at the back, but when I picked her up they didn't properly. She is still making a grinding noise

My Ella was making a grinding sound but it was due to pain before and after having her incisor extracted. Now her mouth is healing and she’s no longer in pain, the sound has stopped and she’s eating again. It sounds like your boy could be in pain with his mouth or that the dental hasn’t been done correctly and somethings been missed

Every so often she will try abit of vegetables/fruit a couple of pieces of hay or a couple of nuggets but it takes her a while and she seems to be struggling to chew it.

Thank-you for your reply how long it it take Ella's mouth to recover?

It’s been 3 weeks so far and she’s only just recovering but the vet said it could take 6 weeks for her to recover fully but like I say, she had an incisor removed which is a big op. It all depends on what is wrong with your piggy and what the vet did x

Unfortunately I didn't pick her up as I had a bad astma attack on way to the vets probably with the stress of it all 😔 so all they said with done the dental work at the back teeth. Was your piggy eating and drinking OK during recovery? X

Guinea pigs need to start eating as quickly as possible after a dental, as otherwise the teeth will be overgrowing again. I run a sanctuary for guinea pigs with dental problems and all of our piggies are eating immediately following dental work.

I had to syringe feed her every two hours for a couple of weeks and she’s still getting top ups in week 3 of recovery but like I say, hers is due to having a dodgy broken incisor removed and being painful from where it was removed, nothing to go with her back teeth x

I was worried about this, she is going back to the vets tonight. It is the same vets but if I'm not happy with what they say tonight, will be looking elsewhere, I thought she would have been ok at this one with it being an exotic one.
