Sorry for another thread, but its a different topic so I wasn't sure what to do

Our pig is very gassy and wasn't passing much stool at all. He was on Baytril for potential dental abscess and I have temporarily stopped it. He isnt eating and has been syringed fed for a week now q2-3 hours which should prevent bloat. He is on metacam as well for pain.

I started him on cisapride 0.5mg q12hours yesterday and he has got two doses. I am massaging his belly prior to our feeds every 2ish hours and I can feel little pockets of gas.

My question is, what does this usually look like in terms of poops/recovery. His poops are now very, very soft and still few. Should I expect this? I havent experienced this before and I would appreciate any/all advice on those who have experienced this. Do folks find the guinea is in more pain once medication is started to help move the gut? Should I bad buprenorphine?

Has anyone tried metoclopramide in addition to cisapride? Or is it one or the other.

Thanks

Hi

Please continue to syringe feed and give plenty of probiotics and poos soup.

Keep in mind that poo output usually runs a day behind (two if the gut is sluggish) so what you are seeing now is the state before you stepped in. That is why we recommend control by weighing, which gives you a better up-to-date control than the poo output, which is always running behind events.
You will have to be patient and not expect instant miracles; when the microbiome in the gut goes haywire, it will take a few days to normalise and stay tender for a goodly while longer.

When I’ve used baytril on my pigs they’ve always lost their appetite. Is there another antibiotic (if needed to continue) that the vet can prescribe? I’ve always found once I’d stopped baytril or changed to another antibiotic that my pigs appetite picked up within 2-3 days. Baytril tends to be quite harsh on their guts so could possibly be the cause of the bloat and gas ? But I’m no vet. Just my experience.
Hope your piggy feels better soon.
