Hello everyone!
I have about 1year and 3months old sow...a week ago I took her to the (exotic) vet because she wasnt eating, pooping and was rapidly losing weight. He took dental x-rays under anesthesia and trimmed her back teeth. She also had a sore in the mouth, got antibiotics and something for pain. Now a week later she stil eats minimally, mostly soft veggies and fruit. She also only chews on one side and eats super slowly (vet said that its because of painful sore which should heal in 10-14 days). He also said that because of her very messed up teeth (which is probably genetic, her mom had her teeth trim two weeks before and she is fine) she might never be able to eat hay again?! How can she survive without it? He recommended some type of pellets which should substitute it but I'm skeptical...
And also i have been feeding her critical care, about 30-35ml a day ( I'm strugling because she has an attitude) and she is still loosing weight, she lost 100g in last 10 days. Is there something else I can do? Please help 🥺

I’m sorry to hear this.

Piggies need fibre going through the system constantly so not eating hay or grass ever again will cause lots of problems. Her teeth will overgrow without chewing hay and dentals would be constantly needed.

You need to increase the amount of syringe feeding to stop weight loss. The typical amount needed per day is 60-90ml to replace lost hay intake. 30ml is only a minimal top up where a piggy is still eating a lot of hay for themselves but needs a boost.

While the sore is healing you need to continue with the syringe feeding and see how things go with the healing and take it from there.

Thank you for your reply, vet told me that 30-40ml for her weight would be enough so that's what i have been doing. I will increase the intake, even if she fights me like there is no tomorrow🐹

Her still losing weight indicates that it isn’t enough. Give her as much as she will take at each sitting and then do more sittings if needed.

I hope she is ok
