My Guinea pig Scrapy has overgrown molars that are slightly pointing inwards, they have been filed down about a month ago. The first week after the procedure he did very well and put on 50g in one week but since then he has lost weight again and is struggling to eat hay. He gets it in his mouth but it then falls out. He can eat his veggies, critical care and grass but has so much trouble with hay. Our local vet has said that they are at the limit of what they can do and suggested that I see a specialist. I have since seen a specialist that has given us pain meds (0.3ml of loxicom twice a day) he offered a ct scan but said that it would be very pricey. Scrapy has had 3 dose's of the loxicom so far and has now started to eat less critical care and has lost more weight when I weighed him this morning. I wasn't happy with the vet that I went to as I got the feeling he wasn't very experienced in guinea pigs, I've now spent £300 and don't feel like we are any further forward.
He has had the following:

X rays of body and head (all looked normal)
Then,

Dental under sedation ( Which revealed the overgrown molars that were tilting inwards)
Was prescribed metacam 0.2ml once a day

Went to specialist who gave loxicom 0.3ml twice a day (The one for dogs) and told us to observe.

Any advice on what to do next would be greatly appreciated xx

Cat and Rabbit clinic in Northampton is one of the best vets for dental issues in the country. I believe they are now only taking referrals. Is there any way you could get the vet to call them/do a referral and could you get him there?

The vet will do a referral no problem but I live in Stanford-le-Hope, Essex. I've looked on Google maps and it says 1hr 56mins to get there. Do you think my Scrapy will be ok in the car for that long?

Piggies travel very well. We have members of the forum who have taken their piggies from Cornwall to see Simon and Kim in Northampton for their expertise

Scrapy will travel very well. I used to take my dental piggie all the way from Cornwall which was a 600 mile round trip. As long as they have a cosy/hide or cover over their carrier, a bit of hay/grass and some slices of cucumber/veggies they do fine

The main thing is getting him seen by Simon or Kim Maddock, they do conscious dentals so no nasty general anaesthetic, it takes about 10 minutes using tiny dental files. You will get any work required there and then plus a sound assessment from real experts who deal with around 40 dental piggies a week. they are the “go to“ vets for anything dental related 8n the UK. You won’t regret it and it’s cheap than GA dentals too.

Good luck, do let us know how you get on

Just got back from the cat and rabbit clinic. We were seen by Simon he has done a dental on scrapy and said that we need to wait and see how he gets on for now but he suspects a infection in the jaw has caused the issues. He wants to see how he gets on over the next two weeks then maybe start a course of antibiotics. Thank you so much for recommending them, Simon was very knowledgable and knows his stuff. We have a follow-up visit in two weeks time. Xx

I’m also on my way back from Cat and Rabbit right now! They are amazing. I’m so pleased they are trying to help Scrapy.

My Edward is seeing Simon at cat and rabbit on Monday. It’s at least a 9 mile round trip but my friend who is a member of this forum is kindly looking after my piggies for me as we’re going on holiday soon and is taking him for me as she only lives an hour away from the clinic.

Fingers crossed Scrappy feels better soon and that you won’t have to go back

Thanks everyone.
Scrapy has been tucking into a corn on the cob and some broccoli this morning but has left the leafy greens. Simon did say that he has taken quite a bit off the teeth so he may have a bit of trouble with leafy greens and things like that for a couple of days. I have given him a bit of recovery food to keep him going in the mean time and popped him out on the grass for a little bit before it gets too hot. He is not to interested in the grass at the min, I'm hoping seeing his friend scooby eating the grass will encourage him to follow suit.

Hi, my guinea pig has trouble eating and the vet said that it's her back tooth that is causing it. She can't have anesthesia so I will be trying to get her in to see Simon next week for conscious dental. Do you know if he does conscious dentals on the back teeth as my vet is convinced that it's not possible? Thank you.

Yes, Simon can carry out full dental work without the need for GA. Ask your vet to send over the history and ask for a referral.

Thank you so much, I'm trying really hard giving her 24/7 care. It's been week and a half since it started, sleepless nights etc I hope I can get her to see Simon in time and he can fix her.
