Hi everyone!
My 5.5 year old piggy Pepper has lost about 75g in weight over the past month. We have been treating her for mites because we originally thought it was that but she is now unable to eat hay properly. She has a few strands but she sort of shakes her head when she eats hay and her eyes water. She has tons of grass just fine and can eat pellets slowly. Her original weight was about 1150g and she is now anywhere from 1065-1110g. She is also rather fluffed up so i will be booking a vet appointment. What can i do to help her? Our vets aren’t guinea pig savy but we see a vet who specialises in small animals. He is very good. Unfortunately i’m in West Kent so am really unable to get to Northampton as i’ve heard there is a good piggy dental vet there. What are Peppers treatment options? Should i be worried? I’m honestly very stressed about the whole thing so could do with any advice possible. I’ve attached a picture - Pepper is the black fluffier piggy. As you can see she sort of gives up on hay and sits down. I’ve been giving her syringe food and tons of grass.

I’m sorry to hear your little girl is unwell. I’m unable to help as I’ve had no experience with teeth issues if that’s what it is, but have you thought about putting a small pinch of oats in with the syringe feed? Members give their piggies pellets to help them put weight back on. I hope you manage to find out what’s causing the discomfort x

I’m sorry your girl is unwell. Hopefully they can get to the bottom of what’s bothering her. If it does turn out to be dental, then you’ll get lots of recommendations on here for the Cat & Rabbit clinic in Northampton.

I’ve been in touch with a woman who runs a guinea pig recuse … she told me our current vet should be able to deal with it, so fingers crossed! i’m really hoping it’s a one time spur or something and isn’t an issue she’ll have for life, as money is quite an issue for me! I will try with the oats and see how she does. she’s currently getting lots of grass. I’ve also noticed she will eat hay, just very slowly and seems to be more picky. I’ve booked an appointment for saturday morning - hoping she’ll be okay in the meantime! x

Is she maintaining her weight by herself now? If not, do step in and syringe feed a recovery feed to make up for the weight loss and reduced hay intake.
I hope the vet can get things sorted for her
