Junior Guinea Pig
Morning, just wondered if anyone had any extra tips for me. My 6.5yr old boars teeth grow diagonal, I take him to a cavy savvy vet every month for them filling down. When they're due filling (they use an electric burr) he sometimes send in a bit of pain and I use metacam twice a day but as soon as he has them done he's fine (he eats on the drive home!) However I woke up Friday morning and he didn't come out of his house for his breakfast. He'd eat a mouthful and then paw at his cheek or just stop eating. I syringe fed him some pellets every few hours. I got in to the vets and she trimmed his teeth but unfortunately this didn't change him and he still wouldn't eat.
I continued with the syringe feeding and went back to the vets, she couldn't see his back teeth (full of food) but assumes it's those that are causing him pain. Annoyingly it wasn't an exotics vet as it was an emergency appt. How guts and heart sounded good.
So I'm back again on Monday if he doesn't improve and they think they will put him under anaesthetic and have a good look at his teeth. He's currently on 1/2tbs of critical care 6 times a day, 0.33 metacam twice a day and now 0.1ml cisapride every 8hrs.
His weight hasn't decreased since yesterday & hes enjoying licking zested cucumber off my hands..
So sorry- very long post but wondered if any experienced owner had anything to add either for my appointment tomorrow or care until that appointment... Would you let them put your old piggie under anesthetic - I don't feel I have a choice but I'm scared
