Hell,

Our baby dinky 11 months old developed a lump on the right hand side of his face on Friday Saturday evening it was a white head right next to his mouth today we took him to our wonderful vet (has piggies of his own amd a specialist) he looked around and in his mouth and it was an abscess and burst (smelt awful) he is booked in for surgery tomorrow (so very lucky to have such understanding vets who will "squeeze them in") but he said as he's not sure if it's right at the back it maybe a left open surgery (to heal from the inside out) I'm concerned as we are due back to work next week... Of course he can stay at guinea grand parents but am worried about irrigation. Has anyone had dental abscess surgery that was left open to heal?

Thank you

I'm gonna tag @furryfriends (TEAS) as she is our abscess queen.Ive dealt with an abscess before with a piggy but never had surgery on it.

Hello. Yes I have had a piggy with a tooth root abscess. It was huge. About 4cm. It was stitched open to heal. I will attach Peppers thread here as there is a lot of information in it that could help you.

It’s great you’ve got a good vet. Also Zithromax is a great antibiotic for abscesses. Pepper was on a 6 week course of it. He did completely stop eating for 8 weeks though while he was on it. Also a good level of pain relief is needed to keep them comfortable.

Good luck Dinky. Sending healing vibes.

Feel free to ask any questions

Hello @weepweeps

Thank you so very much for Peppers thread that has been really useful for us.

Our vet called after the X-rays and said Dinkys teeth are good but he has two abscess which are not connected to the root of his teeth;

We are all a little baffled to be honest. Dinky has been shaved and has both abscesses lanced under GA and both are left open to allow the pus to drain he has advised cleansing twice daily with salt water and try and keep the wound open for as long as possible for the pus to exit - so worrying having the open wound 😳

Zithromax I have heard is very good currently he has prescribed Dinky with Doxycycline until we have the swab results back so it might be changed to that once we know what we need to target. Dinky is also on Metacam twice daily which he is happy to take unlike the antibiotics.

I am worried about keeping the wound scab free, our vet said try for as long as possible but I don't want to rub too hard when using cotton wool and salt water to cleanse in case it hurts him. The pus is more watery than thick - it does smell but not as much now as it's bloody fluid like consistency.

Thank you again for your help will be checking Peppers journey as Dinky goes along 🩷

Hi again thank you for all your support.

Just an update dinky is doing well eating and pooing. His brothers are taking good care of him lots of kisses.

We've washed his wounds again tonight the big one is still open but the smaller one am struggling to re open without hurting him no pus this evening so pleased with that.

Thanks again for all the support 🙏
