Hello,

A few days ago I noticed that one of my piggies is sitting mostly in one place but she still ate and her poops looked normal. Yesterday I saw that it is very difficult for her to eat, she was rather chewing and the situation got worse and worse. I took her to vet specializing in guinea pigs and after diagnosis she said that Nelly (4 years old) has abscess coming from back tooth, that it penetrated the jaw through the bone. She suggested that extraction of molar or molars is the only way. Nelly stayed there for a night and today we will know her blood test results and what exactly needs removing. Vet also said that she has heart murmurs. I know that today we will have to decide :( Either to risk surgery and long recovery proccess, she would have to have her teeth trimmed every 3-4 weeks, etc. or decide for euthanasia. It is really terrible and I don't know that to do.

So very sorry to hear of this.

There are lots of very experienced people on here who have dealt with many a dental problem. I'm sure they will be along soon to help

I myself have had a dental piggy and regular (weekly at one stage) trims did become less frequent as he healed and recovered. These were however, conscious trims (so no anaesthetic use). Try to stay positive

Sending lots of love to you and your piggy. Hope she feels better soon 🤞

I’ve had piggy with a tooth root abscess. It was one of his bottom incisors. He had a very large lump appear on his jaw. He had an operation to stitch it open and I had to flush it out for 2 weeks. The best antibiotic for abscesses is Zithromax. If knocked Peppers appetite completely so he was fully syringe fed for over 6 weeks. But he’s completely fine now. But he did lose the tooth. I don’t think it’s a good idea to extract a molar in guinea pigs as the opposing tooth will have nothing to wear against.

Maybe your vet could try a long course of antibiotics first to see if there is no need for an anaesthetic. Especially as there is a heart murmur too. Good luck.

I’ll post Peppers thread just in case there’s anything helpful to you.

Dental? Pepper is off to the vets tomorrow
